Three Mustangs qualify for the powerlifting state meet

Going to the Boys Powerlifting Region II Division I Championship on March 12, Marble Falls High School head coach Robert Draper had a hunch it was going to be a great day for the Mustangs. And he was right. Three of the four lifters are on their way to the state meet on Saturday, March 26, at the Taylor County Expo Center, 1700 Texas 36 in Abilene. “We went in with a plan,” Draper said. “We went in knowing those three guys could get a qualifying total at regionals to…

Mustangs finish the 2022 season, look to the future

Following a 2-0 loss to Leander Rouse on March 12, the Marble Falls High School boys soccer team provided purple balloons to its seniors, asking them to release them to symbolize the end of their eligibility and what will happen to them in the next few months. “It’s very easy for me to (define) this team,” head coach Rick Hoover said. “It’s character. I told them this all year. By far this has been my favorite team because of the quality of kids they are. I could turn my back…

MFalls’ Bode retires to return to first love — ranching

Marble Falls High School defensive coordinator Zane Bode is retiring from teaching and coaching. His decision was recently announced, and Bode, who guided the second most-stingiest defense in Class 5A Division II in 2021, is looking forward to his next chapter and grateful for the past three decades. “I want to get back to being a rancher and playing cowboy,” he said. “I’m going back to feeding cows. I’m also going to build a lot of fence.” Bode grew up in a family of coaches that included his father, Charles,…

MFalls staff members are promoted to coordinators

Needing to fill open coordinator positions on his staff, Marble Falls High School head football coach Brian Herman looked at his own current members for those openings. He elevated offensive line coach Robert Draper to offensive coordinator now that Heath Hohmann is the new athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan High School. Ryan Craven is the Mustangs defensive coordinator, replacing Zane Bode, who announced his retirement. In making these appointments, Herman noted it keeps consistency and cohesiveness on the staff that’s important for the players. “I compare it…

MF baseball showing traits for a special season

The Marble Falls High School baseball team is displaying plenty of characteristics coaches want to see from athletes: spunk, belief, a never-die attitude, and a willingness to compete until the final out. Head coach Tyler Porter points to two recent examples to illustrate those traits: come-from-behind wins against Fredericksburg 5-4 March 5 and Johnson City 3-2 March 3. The Mustangs (3-3) trailed the Billies 3-1 then took a 4-3 lead only to see Fredericksburg tie the game. Senior Jon “Gouda” Zamarrippa, who recently committed to play baseball at Coastal Bend…

Hohmann leaves MFHS for Skidmore-Tynan

Marble Falls High School offensive coordinator Heath Hohmann is the new athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan High School in Skidmore, Texas. Hohmann’s appointment was announced March 7, weeks after he interviewed for the job Feb. 22. Though he’s been a head baseball and track coach, this is his first chance to be a head football coach and athletics director. “The stars aligned for me and my wife (Michele),” he said. “We’re excited to be around this area and these kids and just excited for this opportunity.” Skidmore,…

Mustangs give The Helping Center some needed muscle

Sam Pearce, executive director of The Helping Center, was in a bind. He had a “big warehouse” truck carrying numerous pallets averaging 1,500 pounds of food apiece and didn’t have enough volunteers to empty the vehicle. In all, it totaled 30,000 pounds of food. Volunteer Lauren Haltom heard Pearce’s dilemma and offered to contact Marble Falls head football coach Brian Herman to see if the Mustangs could stop by. It didn’t take long for Herman to say yes. By 7:30 a.m. on March 1, the players arrived and immediately went…

Mustangs announce postseason awards

The Marble Falls High School football celebrated the accomplishments of the 2021 season with its annual banquet Feb. 28. Head coach Brian Herman had scheduled the event for earlier in the semester, but weather forced a date change. Herman and coaches weren’t in a hurry to have this event since it is the last gathering to commemorate a Mustangs team that reached the third round of the playoffs, a first for this century. He had released the all-District 14-5A Division II teams around the holidays but doesn’t release the Mustang…
