Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. We are getting closer to Aug. 1, the first day of fall training camps for football and volleyball camps. Some have already started getting ready for the season such as the Burnet High School Lady Dawgs. The Lady Dawgs opened team camp July 18 with a strong number of campers. That says plenty about the players’ mindsets and goals for the 2022 season. The annual Texas High…

New classification, opponents for Marble Falls tennis lead to positive anticipation

In less than 30 days, the Marble Falls High School tennis team will be at the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center preparing for the 2022-23 season with more elation and enthusiasm than in past years. That’s because the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs are competing in District 19-4A with Belton New Tech, Burnet, Jarrell, Lago Vista and Salado and are out of District 25-5A that included four Leander Independent School District schools, both Georgetown ISD schools and Liberty Hill. Marble Falls head coach Sam Whitley pointed out how the move…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Here’s a truly scary thought from players who aren’t taking advantage of voluntary strength-and-conditioning programs — the belief they can get ready in August. My advice is not to wait. Get in weight rooms now, get on tracks and fields now because thinking there’s enough time to get prepared for a grueling season in less than 30 days is simply not thinking clearly. Few great athletes can…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. In my almost two decades of covering sports in the Highland Lakes, little surprises me. And yet there’s no question of the optimism surrounding sports programs among the coaching staffs of the three public high schools. That’s because coaches can see their players are putting in the work this summer to get better. That should pay dividends during the upcoming school year. If you doubt, please consider…

Marble Falls’ Harrington shares goals for middle school

Doc Harrington made it clear he wouldn’t unretire unless the right opportunity with the right people came along. That happened three years ago when Brian Herman became the football at head coach at Marble Falls and hired Heath Hohmann and other coaches who where on Jerry Vance’s staff in Liberty Hill a decade earlier. Then when Harrington, who was asked to work at Marble Falls Middle School, outlined his vision to Dr. Chris Allen, Marble Falls Independent School District superintendent, and Jeff Gasaway, assistant superintendent, he discovered two individuals who…

Marble Falls’ Bales showcases talent at college football camps

The desire to play college football is why Marble Falls High School junior lineman Jeremiah Bales has been traveling to different camps. During the last several weeks, Bales has camped at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University, Angelo State University, Texas A&M at Commerce and Texas Christian University. At 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 323 pounds, Bales has the intangibles that college coaches love in linemen. But it’s his strength at the point of attack that gets people talking. Case in point was during the…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The end of June is near. And that means a real push for athletes to attend voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions will pick up speed in July. Let’s face it — even I am struggling to do my workouts indoors with the air conditioner and fans blaring. So those athletes who use the last invaluable weeks of the summer to arrive fit for the first day of fall training…

New sports districts show similar traits to Marble Falls MS

Marble Falls Middle School will play in a new sports district that’s similar to the high school’s beginning in the 2022-23 school year. The football teams will play Burnet, Lago Vista and Lampasas. “They’re closer to us in who we are,” Marble Falls Middle School athletic coordinator for sports medicine and athletic coordinator Doc Harrington said. “I think this new district allows us to be on equal footing.” Middle school coordinators wanted the district to mirror the high school’s district that includes Comal Davenport, the new high school that will…

Marble Falls graduate Shipley is named ACPA head coach

Highland Lakes football player Hanner Shipley is following in the footsteps of his father Stephen and uncle Bob by becoming a football head coach. He will spend the 2022-23 academic year preparing for the Storm’s return to the gridiron in the fall of 2023.
