Marble Falls football shows encouraging signs as first week ends

The Marble Falls High School football team finished its first week of training camp Aug. 6 in full pads that included going through the playbook and hitting. The Mustangs had numerous players in various positions, none bigger than junior Brian Beltran who lined up at tight end and caught a long touchdown pass that fired up the offense. Until that point, the defense was in the backfield making tackles or showed the discipline to contain and not allow the slot-T offense to find its rhythm. Head coach Brian Herman noted…

Those votes electrified attendees, coaches and the athletes. “There’s tingling in my arms,” club president Shannon Roberts said. “I’ve never seen that type of excitement in the room. Marble Falls Mustangs will discover their ‘dudes’ in the next few weeks

This August is unlike any other for the Marble Falls High School football program because of the attention paid to the Mustangs that hasn’t been witnessed since the David Denney days of the 1990s. Austin television stations have attended practice and Craig Way of 104.9 The Horn interviewed Herman Aug. 2 to get the latest on a program that posted a 16-7 record, including three victories in the playoffs, the last two seasons. In short, the Mustangs have earned the interest from others outside of the Highland Lakes because of…

The Point After: Marble Falls fall sports want to earn respect

Spending a few hours at Marble Falls High School Aug. 1 allowed me to observe some of the athletes donning the purple and gold for the football and volleyball teams and talk to head coaches about their impressions of the first day. On the artificial turf at Mustang Stadium were other media members who are as curious about this year’s football team as me. After all, on paper it looks like a full-on rebuild with senior tailback Caleb Vidal being the only returning starter on offense, while a couple more,…

A new district, depth gives the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs plenty of optimism

Different sports have different ways of measuring commitment, determination and heart. In volleyball, it’s the players running a mile. That’s where the Marble Falls High School volleyball team started the first day of two-a-days with 32 players lined up on the Leonel Manzano Track at Mustang Stadium at 8 a.m. as coaches held timers while watching the run. “It’s endurance, it’s also mental toughness,” head coach Kait Goertz said. “Who can push through? I know what they’re capable of. It’s setting that personal gage. It’s a battle with the heat…

More than 70 players in grades 10-12 wore gold helmets and were in either a purple or yellow jersey. The morning session lasted a little more than two hours and head coach Brian Herman saved the best for last – a series of gassers that forces the players to run from one sideline to the…

Marble Falls football gets an early start with coaches reporting July 25

The Marble Falls Mustangs football coaches reported for their first official day Monday, July 25, in preparation for fall training camp that starts next week. Head coach Brian Herman has several items on his to-do list beginning with the most obvious — ensuring everyone on staff knows each other. He also has given each one a coach’s handbook that includes each coach’s duty throughout the season as well as other data each staff member needs. “It tells who’s in charge of shoelaces to who does laundry and what assignments they…

A strong finish in July is important for the Marble Falls football team before the start of training camp

With the beginning of fall training camp days away, the Marble Falls High School football is looking to finish the voluntary strength-and-conditioning program on positives. The Mustangs will have one more week of voluntary sessions Monday-Thursday, July 25-28, and head coach Brian Herman has given incentives to his athletes for attending. The first is the choice of lockers on a first-come, first-served basis. The other is getting equipment assigned. “If all goes well, we’ll be in the 120-plus range in grades 9-12,” he said of the projected number of football…
