Lozoya named the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs softball coach

The Marble Falls High School softball program has a new coach, Alejandro “Alex” Lozoya, who accepted the job days after it was posted in June. “I was looking,” he said. “What sold me was the area and community. My brother is a firefighter in Spicewood, my mom lives in San Antonio, and I have in-laws in Austin. It feels like a great community to raise my boys.” Lozoya was the head coach at Midlothian High School for 10 years. He was at another job interview when Dr. Chris Allen, the…

Several Burnet softball players named to all-district teams

District 19-4A coaches selected several Burnet High School softball players to all-district teams, Lady Dawgs head coach Hailey Wooten announced. First team all-district Lady Dawgs are Savannah Gomez, McKenzie Davis and Lanee McCurry. Wooten noted district coaches saw these three come through at crucial times throughout the district season. “Savannah hit nearly .500 in district,” the coach said. “Lanee got a base hit in almost every district game. McKenzie could slap on both sides. This was her first year to slap from the left side, and she did very well.…

Despite ending, Faith Academy softball accomplishes plenty

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team’s season ended in a 26-2 loss to district foe Pflugerville Concordia May 10. The Lady Flames made a change in the lineup when sophomore pitcher Jaedyn Hart was unavailable to play. Hart has thrown the majority of the innings during the season. As a result, Concordia made the plate adjustments and ended the contest in three innings. Still, head coach Delaney Ferguson pointed out her players grew in many ways during the season. During the first practice, she noted she had three…

Lady Flames win playoff game thanks to great start to the contest

Few people may have given the Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team a chance against Plano Coram Deo in a Class 2A playoff game May 6. But the Lady Flames didn’t pay any attention. Instead, they arrived with the intention of getting a win and set the tone immediately in a 13-11 victory for what most believe can’t be more than the program’s second playoff win ever. Next up is Pflugerville Concordia, a district foe that beat Faith twice in the regular season. The game is set for a…

Two timely hits lead to the Bulldogs’ baseball season ending

As Burnet High School head baseball coach Russell Houston observed game three of a bi-district series between his Bulldogs and La Grange May 7, he gave a prediction to his assistants of the way the contest would play out. “The first team that scores first will win,” he said. Houston was right. The Leopards (19-10, 8-2 District 20-4A co-district champions) scored the only run it needed, in the eighth inning on an RBI single to left field. The lead-off batter got on thanks to a single and the next batter…

Despite ending, Flames turn in a season filled with great memories

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team’s season ended in a 16-5 loss to Halletsville Sacred Heart in the Class 2A playoffs May 5. The loss, however, doesn’t take away from an impressive season where the Flames (8-3, 6-0) went undefeated in district play en route to winning the title. “They never gave up,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “They were always encouraging each other. The summary of our season starts with the seniors and what they wanted to do, which was to win a district championship. And then…

Flames battle toughest road test to remain unbeaten in district

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team survived its best challenge to its undefeated district record. The Flames (7-2, 5-0) outlasted Bryan St. Joseph 13-11 April 22 thanks to solid hitting and taking advantage of runners in scoring position. “Winning is hard,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “This is the first baseball district championship for Faith Academy ever. They took it head-on. It was the most complete team effort we’ve had all season.” Every Flame had at least one hit, and Revelle noted every single one was needed to…

Mustangs dominate in all three phases for win over Leander

A complete game. That’s what Marble Falls High School baseball coach Tyler Porter kept telling his players was the key to victory. He wanted to see the Mustangs (6-12, 2-8 District 25-5A) get consistent pitching and the defense make every routine play with the batters making solid contact and hitting in the gaps. Against Leander April 14, Porter got what he wanted in a 6-1 victory in a contest his team led from start to finish. “All three phases looked good,” he said. “There weren’t many walks, we had good…

Bulldogs earn another come-from-behind district win

The Burnet High School baseball team found itself in familiar territory March 18 against Salado. The Bulldogs (6-4-1, 3-0 District 19-4A) lost their 5-3 lead headed into the seventh inning when the Eagles (7-5, 2-1) put three runs on the board for a 6-5 advantage. That’s when Burnet went to work. Ralston Vance had the game-tying RBI single. Jesse Bachmayer advanced Vance’s courtesy runner, Colby Zinz, to third on a ground ball. Zinz scored on a pass ball for the 7-6 win. “We’re 2-0 at home (in district play), which…
