Burnet’s Vance makes most of all-star game appearance

Recent Burnet High School graduate Ralston Vance made his community proud June 12 by his play at the Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game. Vance, who was a second baseman for the North team, handled a line ball that started a double play to end the contest and drew a walk and struckout in his two at-bats. Burnet coaches see big increase in attendance for voluntary workouts

The number of Bulldogs attending voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions thrills the Burnet High School coaching staff. That’s according to defensive coordinator Ben Speer. Burnet is averaging triple-digit attendance by athletes in grades 7-12, about 50 percent increase from summer 2021. The seven-week summer strength-and-conditioning sessions began June 6. “We can’t be disappointed with that,” Speer said. “Last summer we had 60 guys, and we thought that was good.” Several factors have contribute to the increase of attendees, he said. Marble Falls soccer hosts weekly 7-on-7 matches on Tuesdays

Another sport is enjoying the benefits of 7-on-7, and soccer fans don’t have to travel far to witness it. Each Tuesday at 5 p.m. throughout the month of June, area high school players are stopping at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls, for a night of co-ed soccer where each team must have four girls on the field at all times. Burnet improves existing athletics facilities for more space, to conserve valuable resources

While much of the talk regarding athletics facilities revolves around the construction of the new activity center projected to open in February 2023, Burnet Consolidated Independent School District officials aren’t ignoring existing facilities. They include replacing scoreboards and natural grass and adding track lanes. It’s difficult to miss where these upgrades are happening when fans are at Bulldog Field. At Bulldog Diamonds, the baseball and softball fields are receiving artificial turf and new scoreboards. Originally both facilities had natural grass when they opened in 2008. Burnet High School 2022 graduate Ralston Vance will represent the Bulldogs at the annual Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Dell Diamond, 3400 E. Palm Valley in Round Rock. Vance, who played different positions for the Bulldogs, was selected as a second baseman. The all-stars are those who graduated in 2022. Though basketball season doesn’t tip off until November, area players aren’t waiting for the beginning of the 2022-23 school year to hit the hardwood thanks to the start of the Lampasas summer basketball league, which begins Monday, June 6. The girls play on Monday evenings, while the boys play on Tuesday nights. Teams committed to playing include Burnet, Evant, Hamilton, Lago Vista, Lampasas, Lometa, Marble Falls and San Saba. Burnet football staff welcomes new faces for the new season

The 2022 Burnet High School football coaching staff will have some new faces after familiar coaches left to climb the coaching ladder. Two new hires at Burnet are Colton Brewer, who will be the quarterbacks coach, and Trevor Couch, who will be the receivers coach. Brewer will replace Wood as the quarterbacks coach, a position the head coach has held on every staff he’s been apart of since 2000. Llano’s defense leads the way to wins at Burnet 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament

The Llano High School 7-on-7 team posted a 2-1 record at the Burnet state qualifying tournament May 28. The Yellow Jackets defeated Brownwood 12-6 and Somerset 15-13 before losing to Lorena 19-6. The trench controllers were on display during the Burnet Lineman Challenge May 28. Marble Falls was the highest finishing Highland Lakes team with 36 points for third place followed by Burnet with 26 points and Llano with 22 points. Lorena won the challenge, and McGregor finished second. Bulldogs earn electrifying 7-on-7 win during Burnet state qualifying tourney

The Burnet 7-on-7 team finished 1-2 at its state qualifying tournament May 28. The Bulldogs defeated Taylor in thrilling fashion. In overtime with Burnet trailing 25-18, senior quarterback Tanner O’Hair found junior receiver Grant Jones for the touchdown and the two hooked up again for the two-point pass and the 26-25 win.
