Burnet’s Bennett enters final year in tip-top shape

Soon after the results of the 2022 Class 4A state meet, where he finished second in the 1,600 meters May 12, Burnet High School runner Hudson Bennett left the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike Myers Stadium more determined than ever to cross off what’s left on his list of goals going into his senior year. Part of that was intensive training that turned into an extensive stay in Colorado during the middle of the summer of 2022. “I spent 35 days (there),” he said. “I was running the entire…

Burnet football gains plenty from its scrimmage against Lago Vista

Discovery sums up what the Burnet High School football team experienced during its scrimmage against Lago Vista Aug. 12. “You see things you’re excited about and other things we got to work on,” defensive coordinator Ben Speer said. “The kids had great energy. They did a good job with that, and coaches helped them get there.” Lago Vista, which reached the Class 3A Division I semifinals after finishing as the District 13-3A runner-up, posed a good test for the Bulldogs, Speer said. “Lago Vista is big and physical,” he said.…

Burnet football shows retention in its intrasquad scrimmage

The end of the first week of training camp comes with a reward for the Burnet High School football team and its fans – an intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 6. Head coach Bryan Wood noted it was the first day of hitting for the Bulldogs. “We were very limited on how much live,” he said. “We want depth, but you don’t want to beat up on each other.” Wood was most interested in seeing the athletes movements in every play. Do they know their assignments? Are they moving naturally because they…

Burnet football’s Moms Night Out gives participants a better understanding of the sport

A new group of athletes emerged from the meeting room of the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District field house Aug. 4 determined to learn even more about the game of football from those who know it best – the Bulldog coaches and players themselves. The new group — more than 60 mothers of the current players — had visited Bulldog Field numerous times, but rarely did they understand some of the basic concepts of the sport such as the positions, what the players and coaches do at practices, and why…

Offseason preparation shows during Burnet football’s training camp

The intensity and enthusiasm were contagious at Bulldog Field Tuesday, Aug. 2, the second day of fall training camp for the Burnet Bulldogs. The players and coaches accomplished plenty, which compelled head coach Bryan Wood to call an end to the session 15 minutes earlier than was originally planned, a reward to the players for their commitment to getting a lot of work done with the attitude, attention to detail and commitment Wood wanted to see. The Bulldogs had 64 players in grades 10-12 participate with another 45 freshmen who…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Training camps start for fall sports on Monday, Aug. 1. Here are questions each team will answer in the next few weeks. Listening to a couple of the Marble Falls Mustangs talk about their new District 13-4A Division I opponents tells me they understand this district will be much more challenging than the one they were in the last two years. With so many new faces starting…

Home visits give Burnet families insight into 2022 players’ goals

After the 2021 season concluded, Burnet High School head football coach Bryan Wood took stock and evaluated himself on what he can do better. Top of the list was to strengthen relationships with his players and their families. So he took what might be an unusual step for a high school coach. He offered to meet with his players’ families at their dwellings for home visits. “The comments I’ve gotten are that people are excited about them,” Wood said. “It helps our kids and the football team. I’ve had a…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. We are getting closer to Aug. 1, the first day of fall training camps for football and volleyball camps. Some have already started getting ready for the season such as the Burnet High School Lady Dawgs. The Lady Dawgs opened team camp July 18 with a strong number of campers. That says plenty about the players’ mindsets and goals for the 2022 season. The annual Texas High…

Burnet CISD creates new cross country course for 2022 season

A new cross country course for the Burnet high school and middle school runners means added safety and better training opportunities for the 2022 season. That’s the word from head coach Roy Kiser. “The whole idea was to get the kids off the road,” he said. “Because of the way our school is situated, there’s not really a place to run other than streets. I want the kids to practice on grass. It was what we could get for our campuses. We wanted to make a track that was close…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Here’s a truly scary thought from players who aren’t taking advantage of voluntary strength-and-conditioning programs — the belief they can get ready in August. My advice is not to wait. Get in weight rooms now, get on tracks and fields now because thinking there’s enough time to get prepared for a grueling season in less than 30 days is simply not thinking clearly. Few great athletes can…
