Marble Falls volleyball adds more complexity to its offense

One day before the start of the 2022 season has the Marble Falls High School volleyball team feeling very optimistic. That’s because head coach Kait Goertz enjoyed what she saw from her Lady Mustangs in back-to-back scrimmages at Bastrop Cedar Creek Aug. 5 and at Wimberley Aug. 6 to cap the first week of two-a-days. Marble Falls welcomes Kyle Lehman on Tuesday, Aug. 9, to Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive, for the season opener. The sub varsities play at 5:30 p.m., while the varsity takes the court at 6:30…

Burnet Lady Dawgs changes goals, prepares for another march

Every part of The Doghouse and the auxiliary gym at Burnet High School were being utilized in helping the Burnet volleyball staff make evaluations to determine roster spots for the 2022 season. Head coach Crystal Shipley had an obstacle most coaches welcome. Everywhere she looked, she saw talent among the 47 athletes in grades 9-12, a testament to the Lady Dawgs themselves for their dedication to being their best and to their coaches for instilling in them a love of the sport. It also helps that the Lady Dawgs added…

The Point After: Marble Falls fall sports want to earn respect

Spending a few hours at Marble Falls High School Aug. 1 allowed me to observe some of the athletes donning the purple and gold for the football and volleyball teams and talk to head coaches about their impressions of the first day. On the artificial turf at Mustang Stadium were other media members who are as curious about this year’s football team as me. After all, on paper it looks like a full-on rebuild with senior tailback Caleb Vidal being the only returning starter on offense, while a couple more,…

A new district, depth gives the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs plenty of optimism

Different sports have different ways of measuring commitment, determination and heart. In volleyball, it’s the players running a mile. That’s where the Marble Falls High School volleyball team started the first day of two-a-days with 32 players lined up on the Leonel Manzano Track at Mustang Stadium at 8 a.m. as coaches held timers while watching the run. “It’s endurance, it’s also mental toughness,” head coach Kait Goertz said. “Who can push through? I know what they’re capable of. It’s setting that personal gage. It’s a battle with the heat…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Training camps start for fall sports on Monday, Aug. 1. Here are questions each team will answer in the next few weeks. Listening to a couple of the Marble Falls Mustangs talk about their new District 13-4A Division I opponents tells me they understand this district will be much more challenging than the one they were in the last two years. With so many new faces starting…

Former coach inspires Burnet volleyball players to keep adding to program’s history

The Burnet High School volleyball program conducted its annual team camp July 18-21 led by a familiar face known for making history — Thrall High School girls coordinator and head volleyball coach Bethany Grissom. Grissom was the Lady Dawgs head coach a decade ago when Burnet reached the Class 4A Region I tournament, which was the first time in the history of the program to win three playoff matches. That history was matched by the 2022 Burnet squad that reached the Class 4A Region III tournament. Grissom guided Thrall to…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. We are getting closer to Aug. 1, the first day of fall training camps for football and volleyball camps. Some have already started getting ready for the season such as the Burnet High School Lady Dawgs. The Lady Dawgs opened team camp July 18 with a strong number of campers. That says plenty about the players’ mindsets and goals for the 2022 season. The annual Texas High…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Here’s a truly scary thought from players who aren’t taking advantage of voluntary strength-and-conditioning programs — the belief they can get ready in August. My advice is not to wait. Get in weight rooms now, get on tracks and fields now because thinking there’s enough time to get prepared for a grueling season in less than 30 days is simply not thinking clearly. Few great athletes can…

The number of Burnet Lady Dawgs attending voluntary workouts says plenty about the program

To say coaches of the Burnet High School Lady Dawgs are encouraged by the number of athletes attending voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions is an understatement. The average number of high school athletes attending daily is 40, while 21 middle school students are coming. Soccer head coach Kim Myhre credits a couple of reasons for attendance. “The success we had this year,” she said, noting that volleyball, basketball and soccer all advanced to Class 4A Region III tournaments. “They’re showing up and working hard.” The other, and this might be the most…

Marble Falls volleyball league reveals the traits coaches want to see

The Marble Falls June Volleyball League ended June 29, and few people felt better about the last several weeks than Lady Mustangs head coach Kait Goertz. That’s because she could see her players improve in the key areas she was examining. And they weren’t all based on their footwork, passing and ending rallies. Goertz made it clear from the start she wanted to see her how her players interacted with each other, how they encouraged and corrected one another, and how they got along. “Especially the last two weeks, I…
