Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. Let’s begin with what I believe is the most anticipated contest of the weekend in north Burnet County. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Lady Dawgs back to winning ways in shortened contest

The Burnet High School softball team snapped a three-game losing skid April 5 with a bang — literally. The Lady Dawgs (18-6, 3-3 District 19-4A) crushed Jarrell 15-5 in a contest where they had three home runs en route to finishing the game in six innings. The Lady Dawgs swept the series against the Lady Cougars. “They were due,” head coach Hailey Wooten said of the offensive explosion. After the Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Burnet plated two in its half of the inning, another…

Miscues lead to Lady Dawgs’ first loss in district play

Good teams will take advantage of errors and miscues by opponents and romp to victory, which is what happened to the Burnet High School softball team in an 11-4 loss to Salado March 25. “That just wasn’t us,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “That’s not the way we play. Salado’s a great softball team. We’re not going to beat them by making mistakes and errors. It was a little bit of everything: not hitting, not making a throw, not catching the ball.” Wooten noted the miscues were contagious and it…

Lady Dawgs remain unbeaten, see areas to get better

The Burnet High School softball team scored all the runs it needed in the second inning to beat Georgetown Gateway 7-3 March 22. The Lady Dawgs plated six runs. “Five runs came on two outs,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “And then we scored another one late. It’s deflating for the other team, and hitting is contagious. Once they get started hitting, they go score runs.” The Lady Dawgs (17-3, 2-0 District 19-4A) recorded eight hits in the contest. Lanee McCurry led with 2 RBIs, while Maddie Moise had 1…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Watch videos on Highland Lakes sports on Fierro’s YouTube channel by searching for The Broad Podcaster. While most students have been enjoying the beautiful central Texas weather, others have spent time in the sunshine at ball parks. Perhaps the most fascinating team, to me at least, is Burnet High School baseball (5-4-1, 1-0 District 19-4A). The Bulldogs got what I believe was a gut-check win over Georgetown…

Lady Dawgs erupt for 20 hits for lopsided victory against Jarrell

Nothing changed for the Burnet High School softball team as the Lady Dawgs began District 19-4A play March 15. The Lady Dawgs (16-3, 1-0) beat Jarrell 12-4 in a contest where they recorded 20 hits led by senior Savannah Gomez, who went 5 for 5 at the plate for 2 RBIs off two singles and two doubles. Sophomore Camrynn Guthrie had a two-run homer. The Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to two walks and “timely hitting,” Burnet head coach Hailey Wooten…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The big news in south Burnet County is at 2101 Mustang Drive where Marble Falls athletics director and head football coach Brian Herman is replacing offensive coordinator Heath Hohmann and defensive coordinator Zane Bode. Both are leaving on their own. Hohmann accepted the job as athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan, a Class 2A school, while Bode, in his words, retired to “become a cowboy.”…

Lady Dawgs shut out Lampasas in Battle for U.S. 281

The Burnet High School softball team quickly dispatched of Lampasas on March 8, winning 9-0. Head coach Hailey Wooten noted the Lady Dawgs (15-3) led 3-0 through six innings and then erupted for six runs in the seventh inning. Burnet recorded 15 hits. “I always tell them hitting is contagious,” she said. “If we can get our bats rolling, it triggers all the way down. We have the lineup that can be successful.” Sophomore Landee Harless and senior Savannah Gomez, who signed to play college softball for Concordia University in…

Opening loss doesn’t discourage Faith

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team began the 2022 season with an 18-10 loss to Concordia Christian School on March 7. The Lady Flames (0-1) committed seven errors in the contest. Concordia scored 14 runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings after trailing 7-4 in the fourth. Head coach Delaney Ferguson noted the players will need time to improve. “We have a young team,” she said. “Some have been playing softball for years, some haven’t played in years, and some haven’t touched a ball in their whole…

Lady Dawgs earn more wins at own tourney

The Burnet High School softball program completed a successful weekend on the diamond in their own tournament March 5. The varsity (14-3) defeated Johnson City 3-2 after losing to The Woodlands College Park 2-1 on Saturday. On Friday, the Lady Dawgs beat Gunter 12-2. The junior varsity split games against the Liberty Hill junior varsity on Friday, beating the Lady Panthers 8-4 in the morning before losing to them 13-2 in the afternoon. “The Liberty Hill JV is very good,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “They beat everybody else they…
