MFalls has six athletes advancing to the area track and field meet

Several Marble Falls High School athletes advanced to the District 25 and 26 area meet thanks to finishing in the top four in their events at the District 25-5A meet April 13-14. Top of the leader boards are pole vaulters Django Segovia, Anne McCary and Meredith Cormier who had to contend with 25 mph winds. Segovia vaulted 13 feet to win the district championship on the boys side, while McCary and Cormier each cleared 10-6 on the girls side to finish second and third. “Django was just shy of (setting…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insight

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The week is big for the Burnet and Marble Falls high school track teams. Both will be competing at area meets with athletes aiming to get to regional meets. Pole vaulters on both squads advanced to area meets, which might be the most impressive finishes of the 17 events at district meets. And that’s saying something particularly in north Burnet County, which we’ll get to in a…

Going into the District 3-2A track and field meet of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools April 11, Faith Academy of Marble Falls was the favorite to continue a tradition head coach Steve McCannon doesn’t take for granted — winning the championships. The Flames took 14 of the 17 gold medals, including in the 4×200-meter relay and in the 400 meters, to earn 271 points for their fourth district championship. Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. Let’s begin with what I believe is the most anticipated contest of the weekend in north Burnet County. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Community-loved MFISD athletics facilities to receive improvements

A new track at Marble Falls Middle School’s Pony Stadium and resurfacing of the courts at the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center at Marble Falls High School means those facilities won’t be available to the public for a few weeks. The removal of the old track at MFMS, 1511 Pony Circle Drive, began April 4. Resurfacing at the tennis center is expected to be completed toward the end of April. Workers will fill in the cracks to the tennis courts, level the playing surfaces, and other important measures to…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Watch videos on Highland Lakes sports on Fierro’s YouTube channel by searching for The Broad Podcaster. While most students have been enjoying the beautiful central Texas weather, others have spent time in the sunshine at ball parks. Perhaps the most fascinating team, to me at least, is Burnet High School baseball (5-4-1, 1-0 District 19-4A). The Bulldogs got what I believe was a gut-check win over Georgetown…

Ashton Torns takes second at indoor national meet

Ashton Torns continues to impress track-and-field insiders and observers, and few are surprised by what they see. The son of former Marble Falls High School cross country and track and field coach Anthony Torns, Ashton recently earned a silver medal at the 2022 New Balance Nationals Indoor meet at The Armory New Balance Track and Field Center in New York with a leap of 24 feet and 3.5 inches on March 13.
