Mustangs’ stolen bases lead the way to another victory

The Marble Falls High School baseball team defeated Llano 10-3 April 23 in a non-district contest. “It was another defensive game,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said. “It’s hard to play bad baseball when you play good defense. Our pitchers threw strikes and our defense backed them up.” Senior pitcher Jake Becker picked up the win. In five innings, he gave up three earned runs off five hits, walked four, hit one with a pitch, and struck out four. Kyle Curtis was the reliever and gave up three hits, one…

The Mustangs (7-13, 3-9 District 25-5A) scored four runs in the first inning and three in the second for the victory. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Hudson McBryde and the defense retired the first two Grizzlie batters in every inning. “We feed off each other,” McBryde said. “In any game when the pitcher is throwing strikes and the defense is making plays, that’s what you want. As a pitcher you want…

Bulldogs show who they really are in defeating the Eagles

The Burnet High School baseball team illustrated almost every emotion known in sports in a 24-hour period. One night after losing to Salado 20-3 in a contest that ended after 5 1/2 innings April 13, the Bulldogs arrived at Bulldog Diamonds for the conclusion of a three-game series with the Eagles April 14. Because Burnet had beaten the Eagles 7-6 March 18, both teams knew the winner would take the crucial head-to-head matchup that sometimes determines playoff berths or seeds for the postseason. But this time, the Bulldogs (9-10-1, 6-5…

Mustangs dominate in all three phases for win over Leander

A complete game. That’s what Marble Falls High School baseball coach Tyler Porter kept telling his players was the key to victory. He wanted to see the Mustangs (6-12, 2-8 District 25-5A) get consistent pitching and the defense make every routine play with the batters making solid contact and hitting in the gaps. Against Leander April 14, Porter got what he wanted in a 6-1 victory in a contest his team led from start to finish. “All three phases looked good,” he said. “There weren’t many walks, we had good…

Mustangs push Eagles in another one-run district contest

A pitching change and timely hitting with runners in scoring position helped Georgetown High defeat the Marble Falls High School baseball team 5-4 April 12. “The start was great,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said of his team. “Our Achilles’ heel is we always seem to give some back. That was one of the most complete games we’ve played.” The Mustangs (5-12, 1-8 District 25-5A) couldn’t have started the game better. Pitcher Bryson Atkinson forced the Eagles (19-3, 7-2) to go 3 up, 3 down in the first inning…

Flames enjoy another lopsided victory in shortened contest

San Marcos Hill Country hosted senior night before the start of its baseball game against Faith Academy of Marble Falls April 8, so the Flames braced for the Rams’ best effort. Needless to say, Hill Country found few answers thanks to sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw, who led the Flames (5-2, 3-0 District 3-2A Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) to a 16-0 win in a contest that ended after three innings. Shaw had an in-park grand slam and finished with 5 RBIs. Carter Fromberg and Dylan Offutt each had…

Weekend losses reveal important traits for the Bulldogs

Though the Burnet High School baseball team suffered back-to-back losses April 8-9, head coach Russell Houston pointed out the differences he believes are key for the Bulldogs as they turn their attention to the final weeks of the regular season. The Bulldogs (8-9-1, 5-4 District 19-4A) lost to Austin McCallum 11-8 April 9, a day after a 10-0 loss to Georgetown Gateway. Top of the list in the differences between the two contests can be found in the first inning. In both contests, Burnet gave up four runs. But against…
