Getting better in all phases is a big key for the Mustangs

A day after losing to Cedar Park 1-0, the Marble Falls High School baseball team’s momentum was cut in a 12-0 loss to Georgetown March 17 in a game that ended after five innings. The Mustangs (4-6, 0-2 District 25-5A) will look to bounce back in a road game at Leander at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22. During the loss to the Eagles (11-1, 2-0), Marble Falls committed eight errors. Against the Timberwolves, the Mustangs made every routine play and even a couple that weren’t but couldn’t get the timely…

Bulldogs earn another come-from-behind district win

The Burnet High School baseball team found itself in familiar territory March 18 against Salado. The Bulldogs (6-4-1, 3-0 District 19-4A) lost their 5-3 lead headed into the seventh inning when the Eagles (7-5, 2-1) put three runs on the board for a 6-5 advantage. That’s when Burnet went to work. Ralston Vance had the game-tying RBI single. Jesse Bachmayer advanced Vance’s courtesy runner, Colby Zinz, to third on a ground ball. Zinz scored on a pass ball for the 7-6 win. “We’re 2-0 at home (in district play), which…

‘Gouda’ will play baseball for Coastal Bend College

Marble Falls High School senior Jon “Gouda” Zamarippa has committed to play baseball for Coastal Bend College and will sign his National Letter of Intent in a few weeks. It’s the culmination of playing a sport for 14 years. “I wanted to go to a junior college to find somewhere I can play for two years,” he said. “One of my coaches recommended it to me. I went on a trip there, and I loved it.” Most everyone calls Zamarippa “Gouda” thanks to his sibling, Jack. “I was a pretty…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Watch videos on Highland Lakes sports on Fierro’s YouTube channel by searching for The Broad Podcaster. While most students have been enjoying the beautiful central Texas weather, others have spent time in the sunshine at ball parks. Perhaps the most fascinating team, to me at least, is Burnet High School baseball (5-4-1, 1-0 District 19-4A). The Bulldogs got what I believe was a gut-check win over Georgetown…

Extra innings needed for Cedar Park to beat Marble Falls

It took two extra innings for the winner to be decided between the Marble Falls High School baseball team and Cedar Park March 16. In the end, a pass ball allowed the Timberwolves (9-4-1, 1-0 District 25-5A) to score the game-winning run in the ninth inning for the 1-0 victory. The Mustangs (4-5, 0-1) had two batters reach base when Jett Zurita and Evan NIckowski were hit by pitches with one out in the ninth inning. But Cedar Park pitcher Quint Mullen forced the next batter to fly out to…

Bulldogs come from behind to remain unbeaten in district play

The Burnet High School baseball team was one out away from earning a one-run win against Georgetown Gateway on March 15. But the Gators scored four runs with two outs to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, and Burnet (5-4-1, 2-0 District 19-4A) was down its final three outs. “(My players) were down a little bit,” Burnet head coach Russell Houston said. “You have to stay positive with them. It’s one pitch at a time, one bat at a time. You tell them ‘let’s get the…

Mustangs’ work at tourney helps them for district

The Marble Falls High School baseball team arrived at the Blanco Tournament March 12 with an agenda that went beyond winning. But make no mistake — winning was at the top. The Mustangs (4-4) defeated Texas Military Institute 4-1 and lost to Blanco 4-1 in a rematch after the Panthers shut out Marble Falls 12-0 a week earlier. Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter noted his players hadn’t played a game since their 5-4 victory against Fredericksburg March 5. Then Mother Nature forced Blanco Tournament officials to shorten the Mustangs’…

Bulldogs to use tourney results to get better for district

The Burnet High School baseball team lost both games it played in the Blanco Tournament March 12. The Bulldogs (4-4-1, 1-0 District 19-4A) fell to Houston Lutheran South Academy 14-3 and to Iowa Park 10-3. “The two teams we played played really, really well,” Burnet head coach Russell Houston said. “And we made (several) errors in each game.” Those errors made it especially tough on the pitching staff and the defense, Houston said. Lutheran scored 14 runs off 11 hits and capitalized on six Bulldog errors to win in a…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The big news in south Burnet County is at 2101 Mustang Drive where Marble Falls athletics director and head football coach Brian Herman is replacing offensive coordinator Heath Hohmann and defensive coordinator Zane Bode. Both are leaving on their own. Hohmann accepted the job as athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan, a Class 2A school, while Bode, in his words, retired to “become a cowboy.”…

Making routine plays leads to Burnet’s first district win

In a 2-1 win against Jarrell March 8 to begin District 19-4A play, the Burnet High School baseball team gave a glimpse of how the Bulldogs will be successful. That’s the word from head coach Russell Houston. “If we can compete, throw strikes and play great defense, we can be competitive in our district,” he said. “I tell my kids all the time that if we can make routine plays, we’re going to be in the ball game.” Take hitting. While Jarrell pitcher Carter Kammlah threw 10 strikeouts, the Bulldogs…
