Marble Falls girls soccer wins district opener

The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team stomped Lago Vista 3-0 Jan. 23 in the District 25-4A opener for both teams.

Head coach Abigail Blunt noted the players battled more than each other on the pitch.

“It wasn’t so much fog, but we had a lot of rain,” she said. “You train all year to get your body ready for any situation. Because of the rain, the ball is slicker; it’ll move faster. I’m proud of them for adapting to that. Because it was rough with the rain and the slick turf.”

Therefore, she credited the Marble Falls defense and goalie Mia Trejo for keeping a clean sheet.

“The shutout I think is more impressive,” she said. “It’s not pretty at some point. When the conditions are slick, your backline has to make a play. If you miss the ball in the air, that ball is going for days. In a normal soccer game, you make an error, that ball will die. I saw a whole lot of hand balls because the ball makes a crazy bounce. Every team is going to make a good play. In those conditions, it can flip quick.”

Keeping the Lady Vikings off the scoreboard also illustrated the rapport between the Lady Mustangs and their goalie, the coach added.

“I believe this — your goal keeper sets the tone,” she said. “Mia thinks that when the team makes a play, I can trust them, they have my back. I can do my job. It’s more of a mental thing. It relaxes her knowing her defense isn’t going to give up.”

Goals were scored by Ashley Ferreira, Haley France and Miley Bolanos and Bolanos assisted on two.

“I’m proud of the win and getting the win on the road is big,” Blunt said. “Lago Vista ended up third last year in district. I think that was big for us to get the win and get the shutout.”

Marble Falls welcomes Georgetown Gateway in the district home opener at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in a varsity-only match.
