The Marble Falls High School boys powerlifting team was the runner-up at the Lampasas Invitational Jan. 18.

The Lady Mustangs finished seventh.

What makes the Mustangs’ finish even more impressive is that head coach Richard Scales took a different group of lifters from the squad that competed at the Burnet Invitational a week earlier.

“I’m rotating my lifters,” he said. “We had nine new lifters. To get second was really good.”

The Mustangs had two gold medalists: Mynor Flores in the 220-pound division and Daniel Dominguez in the 123-pound class.

They also had three silver medalists: David Dominguez in the 132-pound division, Oswaldo Sanchez in the 181-pound division, and Josue Garcia in the 198-pound division.

Scales said that if the team handed out an award for most improved right now, it would go to Sanchez.

“He excelled greatly in all his lifts,” he said. “(The winner of the 181-pound division) came down to the last deadlift. The kid he was trying to beat changed his weight. (Sanchez) found out he is a good deadlifter. It made him hungrier. It made him want to push limits.”

Jose Fonseca in the 148-pound division and Jose Galvan in the 275-pound division earned bronze medals.

Scales noted that 10 of the 12 Mustangs set new personal records.

“It’s pretty much the whole team,” he said. “For a lot of them, it was their first meet.”

The Lady Mustangs earned two bronze medals thanks to Alexis Dalton and Genesis Lemon.

Dalton earned a bronze medal in her season debut, while Lemon continues to be steady in her performances.

“Alexis picked up right where she left off. She found out she’s stronger than she thought. She was pushing higher,” Scales said. “Genesis improved on her totals. I think she’ll be one of the top competitors in regionals. I’m very proud of her.”

Abigail Boucher was fourth in her weight class.

“That was really good, especially with the competition,” Scales said.

Junior Bethany Fry, who is an important player to the girls basketball team, also made her debut for the powerlifting team. Scales noted some athletes don’t earn scores for lifts because of the technicality of the sport, not because they are incapable of lifting the weight. That’s what happened with Fry. But instead of being discouraged, the coach said Fry left determined to learn from the miscues and be better.

“It made Bethany hungrier,” he said. “She was so excited to be apart of it.”

As he reflected on the meet, Scales pointed out the positives and believes the athletes will continue to impress.

“I was really proud of them and how they all competed,” he said. “We want to get qualified for regionals. The whole team is like a family. They root for each other.”

Marble Falls will compete at the Llano Invitational at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the John L. Kuykendall Arena and Events Center, 2200 RR 152 West in Llano.
