Basketball tourney to benefit African-American Museum
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament is being conducted Saturday, Dec. 16, at Marble Falls High School to benefit the St. Frederick African-American Museum.
“We wanted to do something different,” Museum President Bessie Jackson said. “This way we get a chance to involve the whole community in the process of the museum. Everyone can take advantage of it.”
The event starts at 10 a.m. and has two divisions: middle school and adult. High-school aged athletes will play in the adult division. Each division is capped at 16 teams. The deadline to enter is Dec. 1.
Cost is $125 per squad with a minimum of three athletes and a maximum of five. Teams can consist of all ages, skill levels and males and females.
“How ever they want to do it,” Jackson said of the make-up of each team.
Contests are half court and the format is double elimination. Prizes are dependent on the number of teams that enter.
A flyer with the QR code to register can be picked up at St. Fredrick’s Baptist Church, 301 Ave. N in Marble Falls.
Jackson said the reason behind creating the museum was to highlight the accomplishments of African-Americans, who have made numerous contributions to enhance lives.
“The disparity of our people,” she said. “They’ve accomplished things, and there’s no recognition. We’re not in a category. We are people who love our country and serve it with our blood. When you don’t know what you’ve gone through as Americans, it repeats.”
