Marble Falls girls basketball loses to San Antonio Warren

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to San Antonio Warren 48-30 in the opener of its Hill Country Classic Nov. 16.
The Lady Mustangs (1-3) face Academy at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, in the Mustang gym on the high school campus.
The Lady Warriors (4-3) used a strong first quarter to build a 19-2 lead they never relinquished. They led 31-10 at halftime.
“In the first quarter, we had too many turnovers, and they got lay-ups,” Marble Falls head coach John Berkman said.
Warren used its speed to cut off dribbling and passing lanes and decided to double down on senior center Lexie Edwards on the low block. Marble Falls countered by moving Edwards to high post and on the perimeter with the aim of spreading the Warren defense out to create one-on-one matchups.
That also slowed the pace. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Warriors 9-6 in the third quarter and got within 12 points with two minutes left in the contest.
But that’s as close as Marble Falls would get. Edwards led with 12 points followed by sophomore point guard Lila Pangborn with 11. Warren junior guard Destiny Hernandez led all scorers with 22.
“We got flustered in the first quarter,” Berkman said. “It’s an inexperienced team that’s getting experience. There were a lot of good things.”
Top of the list was controlling the flow of the game and forcing the opponent to play half-court defense, he said.
“We looked like we were under control,” the coach said. “We looked to go inside. We were able to move the ball better.”
Coaches also emphasized being more decisive and passing the ball faster. The Lady Mustangs displayed that throughout the second half.
Warren gave the Lady Mustangs valuable insight on what they’ll be facing the rest of the season. Each opponent will want to double and triple-team Edwards, so the ability to operate an offense and look for the open player will be important as the season inches closer to the District 24-4A campaign.
“We want to go at them and win games,” Berkman said. “Every team is different every year. We’re going to do what works. We’re having to play our girls lots of minutes.”
