The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team lost to Boerne Geneva 55-48 Nov. 14 in the Flames’ season opener.

“Major credit to their coaches,” Faith head coach Zakk Revelle said. “They had their guys ready to play. It looked like we were playing our first game, and they played their third game.”

The Flames led 18-7 after the first period and 23-19 at the half, but Geneva made a run in the third quarter.

Thanks to a mixture of drives to the basket, transition buckets and jumpers, Geneva quickly evened the contest. Faith sophomore center Judah Phillips scored on his own putback to tie the game at 32-32 in the final 90 seconds of the quarter. But Geneva outscored the Flames 7-2 for a 39-34 advantage headed into the fourth period.

The two teams played fairly evenly in the final stanza with Geneva hitting free throws and a reverse lay-up to keep a 10-point advantage.

Faith Academy sophomore point guard Jase Marshall hit a teardrop lay-up, while Phillips added bucket off a pick and roll to trim the deficit to 49-44 with 1:57 left to play. But that’s as close as the Flames would get.

Faith had 32 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block. Geneva had 29 rebounds, 11 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks.

“(Geneva) didn’t get down on themselves,” Revelle said. “We didn’t shoot as well in the second half.”

He noted the Flames’ defense is allowing them to score, pointing out some players are adjusting to playing four 8-minute quarters of regulation basketball as opposed to pick-up or summer and fall league games.

“I’m happy with our effort,” he said. “We’re continuing to work. We look forward to hosting San Marcos Academy.”

That game is part of a doubleheader with the Lady Flames (3-0), who host Austin St. Dominic Savio at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. The Flames follow at 6:30 p.m.
