Marble Falls girls basketball earns first win of the season

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team defeated Austin Eastside 66-30 Nov. 10 for its first win of the season.

“From the beginning to the end, we played with a lot of confidence with our team and ourselves,” head coach John Berkman said. “We were in control and the more aggressive team all night long. You don’t pick the opponents in front of you. You play to the best of your ability.”

The Lady Mustangs (1-2) outrebounded the Lady Cougars 49-25, had 11 more assists and recorded 20 steals. Marble Falls had a 40 percent field goal percentage for the win.

Senior center Lexie Edwards led with 30 points and grabbed her 500th career rebound. She is a four-year letterman but got the milestone in her third game of her final year of eligibility, which illustrates she averaged about 167 rebounds for the last three years.

“I think it’s impressive,” Berkman of how quickly Edwards grabbed No. 500. “Rebounding is about a tough player who is always around the ball and does a long of banging. It takes a toll on your body. She’s been a really solid rebounder for three years.”

Junior forward Kylie Roberts added 15 points and 15 rebounds. And every Lady Mustang who was available to play scored.

“It was a good night all around for us,” the coach said. “We had different players do different things. They played hard and played well.”

Berkman pointed out Edwards and Roberts, who have been part of a district championship and in the playoffs, must continue to perform at a high level until the guards gain more experience and keep adjusting to the pace of the varsity level.

“Things like that go a long way,” he said. “Kylie sacrifices her body for the ball. Lexie was feeling it. She kept doing her job, and we kept feeding her. It speaks volumes. We lean on them for their experience. Lexie has the most experience, not just on the varsity but playing in big games. That helps build confidence in the other girls. They feel good about themselves as well. It feels good to get a win. It allows us to build.”

Marble Falls is preparing to host is annual Hill Country Classic tournament that features 22 teams representing Classes 2A-6A Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 16-18, at the high school. The Lady Mustangs will play San Antonio Warren at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mustang gym on the high school campus.

“We expect them to bring solid teams,” Berkman said. “You’re never going to be bored sitting in the gym.”
