Marble Falls girls basketball loses to Davenport

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to San Antonio Davenport 42-27 in the season opener Nov. 3.
The two teams battled for three periods with the lead being no more than a possession.
But the final period was different as the Lady Mustangs committed 10 turnovers the Lady Wolves used to get the needed separation for the win.
“Our team is young and inexperienced,” head coach John Berkman said. “In the fourth quarter, they took advantage and got fast break lay-ups. I think that was a problem. I was pleased with the effort and pleased with a lot of things we did.”
He noted that on the offensive end, he saw plenty of hustle and commitment to get to the ball.
“I also thought we got a lot of good shots,” the coach said. “Some were from offensive rebounds. We had 10-plus offensive rebounds. That goes a long way. We had some putbacks we missed. Some were from wide-open lay-ups.”
That’s not unusual, he added, when considering the team has four returning lettermen from last year’s squad and only one starter. She is senior center Lexie Edwards, who dropped in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Her teammates also committed to getting to rebounds and loose balls.
“We have girls who are being aggressive and going after the ball,” Berkman said. “We had some first timers playing on the varsity. That’s a big thing. There are a lot of things that are easy to correct: putbacks on rebounds, not over dribbling. We’re trying to make a pass that’s not there yet. There’s a lot of positive things to build on.”
He also pointed out that while the turnovers in the final stanza were in the double digits, the Lady Mustangs valued their possessions leading up to the last eight minutes. That’s why they were able to stay within striking distance.
And he was especially pleased with how the Lady Mustangs played defense.
“Defense comes down to attitude and effort,” he said. “We often say that defense makes the offense go. Offense comes and goes, but defense is going to be there 100 percent. You can give effort on the defensive end.”
Marble Falls travels play at Austin McCallum Tuesday, Nov. 6, with the freshmen playing at 5:15 p.m., the junior varsity at 6:30 p.m., and the varsity at 7:45 p.m.
