Defensive stops allow Faith Academy football to stay within striking distance of Austin Veritas

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team lost to Austin Veritas 41-26 Sept. 22.

The Flames (2-3, Division 2, District 3 of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) took a 7-6 lead after their first offensive drive. But three turnovers on the next three possessions limited Faith’s offensive opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Flames’ defense stepped up and ensured Faith stayed within striking distance. Veritas led 14-7 at the half.

“The defense played hard, and they made a lot of plays,” Faith head coach John Hallam said. “The defense made some plays that kept us in it.”

He noted it was a one-score game until the final 90 seconds of the contest.

“We had five or six turnovers,” Hallam said. “We committed five personal fouls. Those were killers.”

Senior Cross Sanchez led the Faith scoring with two touchdowns and Carter Fromberg also had a score. Adam Merlick caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Houy.

“(Sanchez) had a number of 20-yard-plus plays,” the coach said. “Fromberg had a long run for a touchdown.”

The Flames have a bye this week. The district opener Oct. 6 is against Waco Live Oak Classical.

Faith students are on a high school retreat that ends Sept. 26. Hallam said the staff and players will review film Sept. 27.

“I haven’t looked at a lot of their film,” Hallam said of Live Oak. “I do know they’re going to be tough.”
