Marble Falls football gets lots of reps, film to get better

The Marble Falls High School football team showed coaches plenty Aug. 11 during the first scrimmage of the 2023 season.

The Grizzlies scored twice in the controlled portion and twice in the live portion. Marble Falls scored once in the controlled portion.

Glenn was trying to add another score toward the end, but the Mustang defense stiffened.

“I like how we closed out the night,” Marble Falls head coach Brian Herman said, “the run game and the stuff that we’re building from that doesn’t have anything to do with the Xs and Os.”

Going into the scrimmage, Herman said coaches were curious about specific athletes in specific plays and in different player combinations. The plays that went for several yards were rarely called after that. Coaches chose to call other plays because they are still evaluating to determine the best fit for each player and how he will best be able to contribute to the team.

“A lot of people got a lot of reps,” the coach said. “I like that we got a lot of film.”

Glenn junior running back Dejuan Dugar, who has five offers from Division I programs, showed why. He used his 6-foot frame and his 4.52 40-yard dash speed to score two long touchdowns, finishing both by refusing to be tackled thanks to his 210-pound frame. But Dugar wasn’t the only Grizzly with a tall frame with speed and strength. Glenn showed that on both sides of the ball, especially its defensive front seven.

“They have a lot of speed,” Herman said. “That speed just wore us down.”

Herman noted the players understood video was another tool to help them improve. They’ll be able to see their biggest miscues — missed blocks — down to the smallest missed details — stepping with the wrong foot.

“Glenn got to do a lot of what they wanted,” he said. “We have to dig deep.”

Some Mustangs played on a Friday night for the first time and committed errors they hadn’t made in practice. Some were on the snap, while others were in handing the ball off. The good news, Herman said, is that as the scrimmage progressed, he saw fewer errors like that.

“There’s a lot to build off of,” he said. “We would get a couple of good plays. But we have a lot to fix. I still love this team. It’s about putting together preparation from one week to the next.”
