Lady Dawgs see positives in loss at Salado Lady Eagles
The Burnet High School girls soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Salado March 14.
Still, the Lady Dawgs (15-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) have plenty in front of them, including representing the district as the third-place team in the playoffs. While that opponent from District 17-4A is still unknown because that district finishes up the regular season March 15, Burnet isn’t sitting and waiting around.
Head coach Kimberly Myhre had scheduled a warm-up match against San Angelo Lake View representing District 3-4A at 3 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Bulldog Field, 1400 Bulldog Stadium Drive. The Lady Dawgs will return for practices Thursday and Friday, March 17-18.
“They asked can we practice all week,” Myhre said. “I told them ‘y’all need a break.’ I know some of them won’t do anything over Spring Break. (Almost two weeks between matches) is a long time to sit and do nothing and then try to get them back in shape. It’s why I scheduled a warm-up game. It takes so much to get into game shape and speed of play.”
Myhre saw plenty of positives in the loss to Salado (16-9, 11-3). The biggest was that Burnet led 1-0 in the first half thanks to a goal by Caroline Valencia, who was assisted by Amelia Griffin.
“That was the first time in the last four years we scored on Salado,” the coach said. “We scored first, and we were up 1-0 until the last 10 minutes of the first half.”
The Lady Eagles tied the match at 1-1 before intermission and then took the lead in the second half.
Another positive? Myhre started a different group of players on the back line, which gave her a look at the 2023 Lady Dawgs.
“I had one senior on the field, and we’re used to having four,” she said. “We’re still trying to figure out our defense with new players and new positions.”
If the standings in District 17-4A hold, Burnet will face Waco Robinson. There’s talk the bi-district championship will be Friday, March 25, though all of that will be finalized once the district matches are complete.
