District preview at Lampasas track meet shows talents, strength of Burnet, Marble Falls athletes

The Burnet and Marble Falls high school track and field teams competed at the Johnny Lam Jones Relays hosted by Lampasas April 5.

Burnet won the girls varsity and junior varsity divisions and coaches at both schools noted their athletes are ready to turn their attention to the District 24-4A meet hosted by Marble Falls Wednesday and Thursday, April 12-13.

Marble Falls got strong performances from a number of athletes including sprinters Adrian Martinez, Jaime Castillo, Zach Woody Ava Carter and Nashla Crott and middle-distance runners Nick Dahl and Tyler Hamblin and from field event athletes led by thrower Kylie Roberts and pole vaulters Katherine and Anne McCary.

And not to be outdone, Burnet’s Grant Jones, Addie Houston, Zaria Solis, Asah Roy, Hudson Bennett, Victor Aviles, Brady Rygaard and Brayden Hill led some impressive finishes, too.

Martinez took silver in the 100, while Castillo finished eighth in the race.

“I am so glad Adrian decided to come back out and run for us this year,” Marble Falls head coach Austin Silva said. “The last time he was on the track was eighth grade. So getting him back his senior year has been huge for our team. Jaime is just one of those ultimate competitors. Football, basketball and now track. Competing is what he does best, and I’m excited to watch him again next week.”

Jones earned triple gold again: the 200 meters, the triple jump and the 800-meter relay and silver in the long jump.

Bulldogs head coach Ben Speer said nothing surprises him when it comes to Jones’ success but very few athletes outwork him.

“I think it’s all attributed to the way he works and the time he puts into his craft,” Speer said.

Speer wasn’t surprised to see Colton Stanford run his way to the medal stand in the 200 meters either.

“Not one bit,” he said. “If you’ve followed any of his races the last several weeks, you know he’s right there in the mix with Grant. Now the tournament season is over for baseball and we get him every meet, he’s done nothing but (set new personal bests) every time he steps on the track.”

Carter took bronze in the 100 meters, while Crott ran for silver in the 200 meters.

“Ava and Nashla have worked their tails off to get to where they are, they compete with each other at every practice and as a coach, I love seeing it pay off for them,” Silva said. “I am excited to watch them compete next week and to have them both back next year.”

Woody is showing a mastery of the 400 meters.

“I think getting second in the 400 was good for Zach because he hasn’t lost one all year,” Silva said. “I’m certain that will drive him to be at his best next week when it counts. Really looking forward to the open 400.”

The Marble Falls coach noted the results of the middle-distance races have a lot to do with a tremendous rapport between distance running coach Chris Schrader and his runners.

“With a coach like Schrader leading our distance kids, we expect them to always be in contention,” Silva said. “Super proud of Nick and Tyler for trusting their training and executing.”

The same can be said of the Aviles, Bennett and Roy, who are more than a step ahead of everyone else in the distance races where they are consistently finishing on the medals stand.

“Distance continues to help keep us at the top of the team standings week in and week out,” Speer said. “Victor breaking the school record this week (in the 800 meters) was something special. All this kid does is go out on the track and get better every week. Can’t wait to see if he can race his way to Austin this year. Hudson is getting more and more comfortable on the track. We’re just thrilled that he’s competing again. We weren’t sure it was gonna happen this year.”

With Jones’ and Stanford’s success in the open 200 meters, it’s no surprise the Bulldogs won the 800-meter relay.

“I think the most surprising thing to me is that we won it from lane 7,” Speer said. “This is incredibly hard to do in the 800 relay. The stage is so long and you feel like you’re out there on an island. I attribute their success to not only Colton and Grant’s abilities but to an unbelievable first leg we received from (Khris) Kassner. His start was tremendous, and he set the tone even when he was battling a stiff headwind.”

The relays are equally important to the Marble Falls coaches where the Mustangs finished in the top three of all three races and the Lady Mustangs ran for gold in the 400-meter relay and silver in the 800-meter relay.

“Having our relays take first in the 4×1 and second in the 4×2 just shows what our girls program is capable of doing,” Silva said. “But what excites me the most about those four girls — Katherine McCary, Ava Carter, Sadie Harris and Nashla Crott — is that they will all be back next year.”

As for the field events, even Roberts was confused by her finishes in the shot put, where she won gold, and in the discus.

“Kylie had an off day in the discus but we are confident she will be just fine heading into district next week,” Silva said.

The one event Burnet County should dominant is pole vault thanks to a trio of Bulldogs and a pair of Lady Mustangs.

“Anne and Katherine McCary expect to medal each time they compete in pole vault because of the amount of work they have put into the event,” Silva said. “I am super proud of them and their consistency this year.”

“The vaulters continue to impress us every week,” Speer said. “This time it was Rygaard getting the upper hand in Lampasas. That’s not gonna sit well with Hill, and he will be out to take the top spot back next week in Marble. Not to be outdone is Peyton Shirley who is quietly sneaking his way up the ranks as well. It’s gonna be fun to watch these guys go at it again this next week for the district crown.”
