Burnet girls soccer beats Canyon Lake to add bi-district title

The Burnet High School girls soccer team crushed Fischer Canyon Lake 5-1 March 24 for another bi-district championship.

Next up is Gonzales at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at Hutto High School. Adults pay $6, while students pay $4. No cash is accepted.

The Lady Dawgs (24-2-1, 12-0 District 24-4A champions) faced a 1-0 deficit at the half, much like the first time the two teams met during the pre-district season.

Head coach Kimberly Myhre said she challenged her players about whether or not they wanted their season to continue.

“We had a heart-to-heart talk,” she said. “We started out not playing hard. Canyon Lake got one, and even after they got one, it didn’t light a fire. I asked them, ‘Is this how you want your season to end?'”

It didn’t take long to give Myhre an answer. The Lady Dawgs scored three goals in the opening 12 minutes of the half. After it was all finished, the Lady Dawgs showed their desire and determination to be victorious.

Brook Oliva had three goals and an assist, Taylor Petty and Lainey Rye had the other two goals. Kaycie Banton and Amelia Griffin each had two assists.

Myhre commended the Burnet defenders for ensuring the Lady Hawks couldn’t answer the Lady Dawgs’ offensive onslaught.

“Our defense played a great game as well as our goal keeper ,Juliet Morales, who had some amazing saves throughout the night,” the coach said.

As she thought back to the contest, Myhre believes her players showed who they really are now that they are in the one-and-done part of their season.

“(They) came out hard second half and scored to take the win,” she said. “This group of girls showed so much heart and fight throughout this game and never gave up.”
