Marble Falls girls soccer begins district second round with win against Lago Vista

The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team defeated Lago Vista 2-0 Feb. 17 after losing to Burnet 5-3 Feb. 14.

The Lady Mustangs (9-3-1, 6-1 District 25-4A) remain in second place in the district standings behind the Lady Dawgs with five matches left.

“It was a learning experience for us,” head coach Abigail Blunt said of the loss to Burnet. “We know we still have way more to learn and grow. I was proud.”

She noted Marble Falls scored first and the two teams played to a 2-2 tie at the half. The Lady Mustangs then took a 3-2 with about 13 minutes left in the contest.

“We couldn’t hold on to (the lead),” the coach said. “We have a very young squad. It shows we’re still growing and learning.”

The Lady Mustangs are still learning specific strategies of the sport and what Blunt to wants to see on the field. In addition, they are still learning each other’s tendencies and how to operate as a single 11-player unit in moving the ball to give themselves their best chances at scoring.

“It’s 40-minute halves and no timeouts,” she said. “As a coach you have to teach, you have to teach them how to build a play. They have to know that instinctively.”

That’s one reason why she was pleased with the victory against Lago Vista to begin the second round of district play and stay a game ahead of Georgetown Gateway in the standings. The Lady Gators are visiting Mustang Stadium at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.

“That 2-0 win was awesome,” she said. “But we can’t be satisfied with how we played.”
