The Burnet High School swimming and diving team had several athletes qualify for the Class 4A state meet thanks to outstanding performances at the Class 4A Region IV meet Jan. 27-28.

“All 15 athletes who raced at regionals dropped time for this season, reached a new personal best time, or contributed to the overall scores by moving up in placements from preliminaries to finals (that awarded) more points to the teams’ final scores,” head coach Elizabeth Zamagni said.

The Bulldogs finished third in the team standings with four podium finishes for 196 points. Hayden Brown was third in the 200-yard freestyle, and Lucuiz Griego finished third in the 100-yard backstroke. The 200-yard freestyle relay placed third thanks to Aidan Zollitsch, Hayden Hamner, Griego and Brown.

The Lady Dawgs placed fifth in the team standings with five podium finishes for 172 points. They were paced by Isabel Lunsford, who broke two program records and helped the two freestyle relays set new program records, too.

Isabel Lunsford won gold in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.97 and the 100-yard butterfly in 59.48 seconds to set new Southwest Aquatics Center Pool records, which was the site of the regional meet. The 400-yard freestyle relay team took silver in 3:59.05, while the 200-yard freestyle relay earned a bronze medal in 1:48.21. Swimmers on both relay teams were Elyzabeth Musiak, Graciela Lara Durna, Caroline Lunsford and Isabel Lunsford. Julia Jenkins finished third in diving.

The Class 4A state meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, at the Josh Davis Natatorium and Bill Walker Pool in San Antonio.
