The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls tennis team won the Class 3A state championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools April 9-10 in Waco.

And the boys team finished third at the state tournament led by the boys doubles team of Grant Nagle and Luke Patterson that won the individual state championship.

The Lady Flames earned 21.5 points in the overall team total. Each winning match earns 2.5 points and a loss results in one point. McKinney Cornerstone Christian Academy earned 13.5 points to finish as the runner-up.

“We won by a good margin,” head coach Rich Coleman said. “Our top seeds did well like we expected. Our second doubles team performed well and made it to the semifinals. That was the surprise of the team.”

That team is Alyana Reyes and Ella Lewis, which shocked onlookers with a first-round win by coming from behind then won the next match in straight sets before losing to the eventual state championship in the semifinals.

One of the two wins came against an opponent that beat them at the Class 3A South Region tournament days earlier.

“The team rallied around them and helped them to believe in themselves,” Coleman said. “They took extra lessons and instruction. They had to dig deep and perform well in clutch moments.”

The doubles team of Halley Offut and Jaden Turrentine lost in the championship after winning three matches.

Girls singles player Emerson Price lost in the semifinals after winning two matches.

“Reyes and Lewis gave us the extra boost to lock in the state championship before the tournament finished,” Coleman said.

In the boys tournament, Nagle and Patterson cruised to the championship match where they didn’t lose a set. That changed in the final match of the tournament when Allan Pahmiyer and Cooper Coburn of Waco Live Oak won 6-1. But the Flames battled back to even the match by winning the second set 6-1.

Then it came down to the tiebreaker. Nagle and Patterson were up 9-8 and had championship point as they awaited the serve. Instead, the Falcons double faulted and the Flames celebrated.

Coleman said the fan attendance was championship worthy, pointing out the Live Oak campus isn’t far from the tournament site.

“Live Oak had 30 or 40 students there,” he said. “It really felt like a home match for Live Oak. It was really hot. (Nagle and Patterson) were able to recover and dig deep. Grant had the flu. He had to play through medical treatment.”

Boys singles player Ever Bigtree lost in the second round, while Witten Reinert lost in the opening round.

“We’re proud of all of our underclassmen,” Coleman said. “The fact they were able to go compete shows they have a bright future in the program.”

This marks the first team state title for the Faith tennis program since 2019.

“We’re glad to keep the winning tradition set by (former head coach) Michelle Stallard and the others of the past,” Coleman said.
