The Marble Falls High School tennis players keep adding wins to their records in an effort to get a high seed for the District 24-4A tournament in a couple of weeks.

The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs hosted its own tournament April 4 where at least 18 draws made up most brackets and as many as 24 made up another.

The tournament awarded points for finishes in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Marble Falls finished as the runner-up behind La Vernia.

“It’s the second tournament we’ve hosted,” head coach Samuel Whitley said. “Obviously, it’s a team effort.”

The Marble Falls boys doubles team of Weston York and Cooper Kelley “got first in a spectacular final match,” Whitley said.

“They were down 5-1 and came back and won the match,” he said. “They won 8-6. Weston had two aces. The final point was an ace. It was a very good doubles match for the final.”

The girls doubles team of Mia Hernandez and Sophia Trudeau defeated teammates Elsa Vandiford and Chloe Taylor for third place.

“It was close,” Whitley said.

Boys singles player Cooper Womack won the championship.

“He had no competition throughout the day,” the coach said.

A day earlier, the junior varsity hosted its event.

In girls singles, Savannah Hamblin took first place, while Adelina Flores was the consolation champion.

In girls doubles, Harper Cook and Brixton Osloond won the tournament by edging teammates Jacey Moffett and Danielle Topfer.

Whitley remains encouraged by what he is seeing from his players, noting their court play is being dictated by their mentality going into every match.

“We’re rising up to the competition level,” he said. “We had some really good doubles teams in this tournament. Our doubles teams rose up and got the victories. We are better at challenging our opponents than what we have been in the past. We’re not intimidated. We know we can rise up and win.”

Marble Falls will compete in the Liberty Hill tournament Friday, April 11.
