The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Salado 15-3 March 14 in District 24-4A play.
“They are very good,” Lady Mustangs head coach Alex Lozoya said. “They’re a very good squad.”
Salado scored 4 runs in the first inning, 3 in the second, and 5 in the third. The Lady Mustangs plated 3 in the fourth inning only to see the Lady Eagles (14-4, 3-0) match it for the final score.
Marble Falls used freshman pitchers Brooklyn Damico and Callie Phillips, who allowed 11 earned runs off 12 hits.
Salado pitchers were patient at the plate and fouled off pitches they didn’t like until they got one they could drive. Lozoya noted the balls were hit into open spots that caused the Lady Mustangs to run to make plays. The Lady Eagles’ used their speed to quickly round the bases.
“We talk a lot about how there’s a chance for our defense to show off,” he said. “And we just have to play.”
Salado sophomore pitcher Aubree Zammat earned the win. She allowed 3 earned runs off 3 hits and struck out five.
Kylie Roberts, Cheyenne Thompson and Phillips each had a RBI. Jocelyn Suarez, Roberts and Phillips each had a hit.
“Our lineup will make some adjustments a second time through, but it just took us a while to get back around the lineup, too,” the coach said. “It’s one of those things where I am always curious to see what it is they will or will not do, especially in this district.”
It’s a crucial week for the Lady Mustangs, who travel to play at Burnet at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, and welcome Jarrell at noon Wednesday, March 19.
Salado is 4-0 in the district standings, while Georgetown Gateway is 3-0, Marble Falls is 2-1, Jarrell and Burnet are 1-2, Lampasas is 1-3 and Taylor is 0-3.
“The girls were in good spirits when we came in early on (March 15),” the coach said. “We got a good lift in. We’re just looking forward to the week. All we can do is just find a way to see if we can take one at a time.”
