The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team defeated San Antonio Davenport 2-1 March 7 in District 26-4A play to give the Wolves their only district loss with two games remaining in the regular season.

“It was a big win,” Mustangs head coach Ryan Craven said. “We’ve been in a lot of close games. We’ve won a lot of close games. It was definitely good to win one this late in the season.”

The two teams played to a 0-0 first half tie.

But the Mustangs (12-5-3, 5-1-2) got on the scoreboard first thanks to Rigo Lopez, who “crossed” the ball the Marco Almazan. Almazan used his head to knock the ball into the net.

The Wolves (6-1-1) counter attacked and scored on a corner kick to tie the match.

“Unfortunately we didn’t defend like we were supposed to,” Craven said.

With under two minutes left, Esteban Dominguez dribbled deep into Davenport territory “and drew a foul.”

“He crossed it to Koda Langley, who jumped up off his feet” and scored on the header, the coach said.

“(My) players know each other, and we do practice set pieces,” he said. “We lined up like we were taking a corner kick.”

Before he kicked the ball, Dominguez asked his coach if he wanted a pass or a goal attempt. Craven told him to look for an open teammate.

“It worked out for us,” he said.

Davenport is at Fredericksburg (6-1-1) Tuesday, March 11. If that match ends in a tie and the Mustangs win out, the district championship will be shared between the three squads. But if Davenport or if Fredericksburg wins, the victor will be the outright champion.

That’s because the Mustangs have two losses and three ties, while the other two teams have one loss and one tie.

All three teams end the regular season playing the bottom half of the district standings Friday, March 14.

Marble Falls is at Fischer Canyon Lake (0-6-2) Tuesday, March 11, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
