The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team blasted Bandera 8-2 Feb. 25 in District 26-4A play for fourth place in the standings.

The Lady Mustangs (9-7-1, 2-3) took a 5-1 at the half.

“These girls played so well,” head coach Marisa Miller said. “We had been struggling a little bit offensively. It was a great game to boost our spirits. It came together. All the things we’ve been working on all year came together.”

The Lady Mustangs’ spacing and passing was on point, especially when moving the ball to the top of the offense to allow the playmakers to do what they do best.

“We have been working on not playing reactive and taking control of the game,” the coach said. “We’ve been working hard on team chemistry. It came together.”

Sophomore Suzena Perez Angel scored 3 goals, while junior Dulce Macias Garcia added 2 goals and sophomore Hannah Welch and freshmen Fernanda Perez and Avrie Wallace each scored 1.

The first goal came on a throw-in by Garcia to Angel, who already was in the box.

“Dulce grabbed it quickly and threw it to the box,” Miller said. “Susie was one on one with their keeper. That was an exciting goal.”

While the Lady Mustangs showed a better understanding of the playbook, spacing and reading the defense and each other to know where to go, the coach said they can get better.

“I think we’re still working on playing all 80 minutes,” she said.

Case in point was how the Lady Bulldogs scored their first goal of the match. It came in the final 30 seconds.

“I think we lost focus for a second,” the coach said. “It followed an injury. They had a little bit of a breakaway with the ball and scored. Their second goal was a great shot. It was a ways away. It was a beautiful shot.”

Marble Falls welcomes Wimberley (15-1-1, 4-0-1) Friday, Feb. 28, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow. The Texanns are the district leaders followed by San Antonio Davenport (12-1-1, 4-1) and Fischer Canyon Lake (9-5-2, 2-1-2). Five matches remain in the regular season.

“We’ve been working for a long time on offense,” Miller said. “It proved to us all the hard work is showing. We’re getting it, and we’re starting to learn how to compete. We’re hoping we can bring that to the second half of district.”
