Faith Academy girls basketball loses to Live Oak

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team lost to Waco Live Oak 58-48 Feb. 22 in a regional final the Class 3A playoffs of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools to end its season.
“The girls played an unbelievable game,” head coach Harvey Vaughn said. “It was a good game all the way till the end.”
The Lady Flames led after the first quarter, but the next stanza paved the way for the outcome, the coach said.
“The whole game came down to the second quarter,” he said. “We were in foul trouble. I substituted. They went to their press. They scored 27 points in the second quarter.”
Live Oak took an eight-point lead into the intermission and built it to a 13-point advantage.
“But we kept playing and grinding,” Vaughn said. “They hit a 3-pointer, we didn’t score, they hit another 3-pointer. We scored and cut it to six. We were in range, but they made more plays than we did. They got steals and shot free throws.”
Foul trouble plagued the Lady Flames as a key starter fouled out early in the fourth quarter.
Shipley led with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks and an assist, while Weems had 17 points, 24 rebounds, 6 blocks and 2 steals, freshman Selby Sanchez added 6 points and sophomore guard Lilly Koziel hit a 3-pointer.
“Hadley played well,” Vaughn said. “Natalie made some big shots. Selby played her best game of the year.”
Shipley is the team’s only senior. And though the Lady Flames finish with an 8-21 record, Vaughn said they’re much better than that.
“It was the best game they’ve played all year,” he said. “I was proud of them. To see them go out and play like that was amazing. (Opponents are) not getting an 8-21 effort.”
