The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team shut out Wimberley 5-0 in the District 26-4A opener for both squads Feb. 7.

The Mustangs led 3-0 in the first half thanks to junior Joaquin Aguilar, who scored two goals while senior Esteban Dominguez added the other goal.

Senior Juan Hernandez Barajas, Jr. scored the fourth goal with 19 minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the match.

Aguilar got his hat-trick goal with 11:34 left.

New head coach Ryan Craven called winning the district opener “huge.”

“Wimberley is historically a good program,” he said. “We’re getting touches. We talked about priding ourselves on defense for the rest of district. My goal is not to give a goal. Whether they were a striker or whatever, I want them to defend all way to the goalie. And everybody out there tonight did that. That was good. So our effort was great, but we defended as a team.”

Senior Jordan Guzman played center midfielder and helped lead the defense. All three Mustang goalies played and ensured the shutout. They are seniors Sebastian Martinez-Medina and Indalesio Lopez Bolanos and junior Jett Marcum.

“Sebastian got a couple of saves,” the coach said. “At the beginning of the year, we played Sebastian because Indalesio was out. We have faith in them.”

Coaches made a change at the top for the Mustangs by inserting Aguilar there. Some Mustangs have been ill and unable to go.

“We have some weapons up top,” Craven said. “Joaquin Agular’s been historically a defender for us. Coach (David) Griffin had the idea of putting him up there because of his speed. We tried that a few weeks ago. I just like it. If somebody is having an off night, somebody else will step up.”

Marble Falls welcomes Fredericksburg Tuesday, Feb. 11, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

“I’m just I’m real proud of how we defended,” Craven said.
