Burnet boys soccer leaves no doubt in beating Jarrell

The Burnet High School boys soccer team crushed Jarrell 5-1 Jan. 27 to take possession of second place in District 25-4A.

“This was a decisive game in deciding district,” head coach Benjamin Boorman said.

Burnet struck first thanks to senior captains Hector Arredondo Ramirez, who threaded a ball to Miguel Valdez.

Jarrell upped the game by pressing higher and won a free kick on the edge of the field the Cougars used to tie the match at 1-1.

The next 15 minutes of the game were deadlocked with good defense by both teams.

Sophomore Marco Campos broke the deadlock by shooting from a deflected corner kick for a 2-1 lead at the intermission.

Heavy fog moved in during the second half, and it was all Burnet for the rest of the game.

Sophomore Ricardo Flores linked up with senior Cleto Leon to score a banger from 25 yards out.

Ramirez finished the game “doing what he does,” Boorman said.

He scored from 40 yards out over the goalkeeper, who got caught out of goal.

He finished the game by getting a great through ball from Valdez, who returned the favor to him for an assist.

Flores was named the Man of the Match, while Lisandro Olvera Leon is the Junkyard Dawg.

The junior varsity lost to Jarrell 2-1. Nathan Burdell scored the Bulldogs’ only goal and was named the Man of the Match, while Austin Miller was the Junkyard Dawg.

The Burnet varsity is on a bye Friday, Jan. 31, and will travel to play Austin Achieve at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4. The junior varsity plays at Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Friday, Jan. 31, and at Achieve Tuesday, Feb. 4. Both matches are at 5 p.m.
