The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team lost to Pflugerville Connally 3-2 Jan. 17.
The Cougars (3-4-1) took a 1-0 half-time lead on a corner kick where the Mustangs didn’t get set up in time because they believed it was a goal kick.
“They got a fluke goal,” Mustangs head coach Ryan Craven said. “We didn’t clear the ball like we needed to.”
Then Connally added two more in the second half. That’s when the Mustangs (4-3-1) responded.
Sophomore Esteban Dominguez and senior Alessandro Calderon both scored unassisted goals. Craven noted the Mustangs were close to scoring the equalizer.
“We hit the poll twice,” he said. “I’m really proud of everyone and how they competed. We weren’t not playing hard. We decided to lock it into another gear.”
He noted this is only the Mustangs’ third loss. Each one has been a single goal.
“In the Georgetown and Connally games, we got down big,” the coach said. “Instead of giving up, we decided to make a run. As bad as we played, we gave ourselves a chance to win, which is the sign of a good team.”
Marble Falls will play at Austin Bowie at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22.
