The Burnet High School girls basketball team crushed Lampasas 36-22 Jan. 17 in District 24-4A play.

Going into the contest, Burnet head coach Doug Messer and his multi-year lettermen spoke to the team about what to prepare for.

“There are some gyms you play in that are shooter gyms,” he said. “Lampasas has a great home crowd and a great home court. We’ve never shot the ball great there. Our veterans said that. We are going to have to lock down on defense.”

Burnet led 10-1 after the first period and 21-8 at the half. The Lady Dawgs scored more points in one quarter than they allowed in the entire first half.

“It’s a matter of locking in,” he said. “Our players said, ‘Let’s make sure they struggle.’ We really played great team defense.”

Junior guard Journey Denton and senior forward Aubrey Mathews defended Lampasas leading scorer Addison Borchardt, the team’s leading scorer. She finished with 5 points.

Burnet made sure it defended the pick-and-roll so when the Lady Badgers wanted to get Borchardt a good look, someone rotated over.

“The defense helped out,” Messer said. “You have to know where the scorers are. Those two lock in and do a great job. They’re both tough minded. They take a lot of pride in it. They have the mindset to do it. Not everyone wants to play defense. They take pride in it. It’s one way they can help our team.”

Messer said the while Denton and Mathews may be his go-to defensive stoppers, he pointed out they’re not alone. He said senior point guard Sydney Lough also volunteers to defend the opponents’ top shooter. But because she runs the Lady Dawgs’ offense, he doesn’t want to add more to her duties.

“It gives her a little break,” he said.

Burnet senior center Cydney Robison led with 8 points followed by senior forward Sierra Schaefer, Lough and Mathews with 6 apiece.

Because of the inclement weather, the games at Burnet High School have been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 22, with tipoffs still to be announced. p.m.
