Burnet boys soccer beats Travis in district opener
The Burnet High School boys soccer team beat Austin Travis 1-0 in the District 25-4A opener Jan. 14.
The lone goal was scored by Genesis Ceron on a deflection on the Bulldogs’ first free kick of the night.
Head coach Benjamin Boorman indicated the Bulldogs had numerous opportunities to add more.
“We had so many chances,” he said.
He pointed out that Hector Arredondo and Marco Campos “controlled the midfield and fed Miguel Valdez and Genesis Ceron into Travis’ territory all night.”
Boorman commended Burnet’s defense, which was exceptional.
“Lisandro Olvera, Dwight Lopez and Rigo Valdez played shut-down defense,” he said. “The Rebels only had two shots on the night.”
Sam Rodriguez was named the Man of the Match.
“Sam played his best game of the year and made streaking runs down the left side of the field and covering the wings,” the coach said.
Cleto Leon was the Junkyard Dawg “for his constant pressure on the left wing of the Rebels. He owned the right side of the field,” Boorman said.
The junior varsity lost 7-1. Nathan Burdell scored the Bulldogs’ only goal on a blocked shot by the goal keeper after Steven Tobar, Burnet’s new student from El Salvador, attempted the shot.
Austin Miller and Aiden Morris both took turns in goal.
“Chris Hernandez must have run about six miles that game trying to support his teammates,” Boorman said. “This was his first game back after breaking his arm on the first day of tryouts. The boys have a bit of a depleted squad right now but played hard until the end.”
Chris Hernandez was the Junkyard Dawg and Steven Tobar was the Man of the Match.
The Bulldogs will host Austin Eastside Early College Friday, Jan. 17, with the junior varsity playing at 4 p.m. and varsity at 5:30 p.m.
