Burnet boys soccer competes through freezing temperatures at tourney
The Burnet High School boys soccer team went 1-2 at the Manor tournament last weekend.
The Bulldogs beat Columbus 2-0 thanks to goals from Miguel Valdez and Ricardo Flores.
They lost to Manor New Tech in a contest that was played in 20 mph winds and freezing rain “that felt like 20 degrees,” head coach Benjamin Boorman said.
“New Tech’s left winger used the wind to whip in a ball from the left flank to their striker at the top of the 18, and he perfectly glanced a header from distance into the side net,” he said. “This would not be possible except in these windy and wet conditions.”
New Tech added a second goal before the half on a ball that bounced off the wet turf and in a spot where the Burnet goalie was not.
The Bulldogs took on Needville, which won its bracket.
“Needville was very physical and had too many skilled players,” Boorman said. “Our defense played well, but we could not keep the ball out of the net as they physically dominated our box with constant crosses and taller forwards.”
Needville won the tournament.
Lisandro Olvera was named the Junkyard Dawg for the tournament for bodying up the opposing teams’ attackers. No goals have come from his side yet this year, the coach said.
Marco Campos was named Man of the Tournament for Burnet.
“He has amazing touch and demands respect with his physical play,” Boorman said.
Burnet travels to play Austin Travis Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Burger Center to begin District 25-4A play. The junior varsity competes at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
