The Burnet High School girls basketball team lost to Salado 63-54 Jan. 7 in District 24-4A play.
The Lady Eagles (14-11, 1-1) led 13-11 after the first quarter but earned the necessary separation in the second period when they outscored the Lady Dawgs (10-14, 1-1 ) 18-12 for the 31-25 half-time lead.
Burnet didn’t win a single period throughout the contest.
“Salado played extremely well,” Burnet head coach Doug Messer said. “We didn’t play badly; we just had some missed opportunities. It was a really good game to watch.”
Salado senior guard Ally Ihler led with 20 points, while junior guard Karlee Konarik, daughter of head coach Diane Konarik, finished with 18. Another Eagle also had 18 points.
“Coach Konarik has done a great job,” Messer said.
Burnet freshman forward Emma Hashbarger led with 17 points.
Messer noted that in most games, scoring 54 points is enough to win. But that wasn’t the case against Salado.
“They had a good game plan,” he said. “I watched the game film twice. It came down to missed opportunities. There were several in the paint. They played well, and we didn’t play good enough to win. I thought we played well in all of our phases.”
Messer said this game illustrates what he believes about this district. Each program has terrific players and coaches who know how to scheme to put their teams in the best position to succeed.
“I think we have some quality players at every school,” he said. “Every school has quality players, and they’re good. “It really truly was a good game. I enjoyed coaching it. They played hard and they work hard. You have to accept the outcome. It helps you get better.”
Burnet welcomes Taylor Friday, Jan. 10. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:30 p.m. and the freshmen at 8 p.m.
