The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team beat Austin Achieve 3-2 Jan. 7 to give head coach Ryan Craven his first win.
The Mustangs (1-1-2) and the Polar Bears played to a 1-1 tie at the intermission before Marble Falls scored two in the second half. Achieve added a meaningless goal when the contest was decided.
“The boys played well,” Craven said. “Achieve is a really good team. In the second half, we woke up offensively. I think we found our lineup.”
Esteban Dominguez scored two goals to move his total to five on the year. Brandon Guevara scored the other goal on a corner kick.
“In the second half, our guys came out with more energy and enthusiasm,” the coach said. “I think they became more of a team.”
One of the Polar Bears’ goals came off a corner kick.
“We have to do a better job of defending and getting in position,” Craven said. “That was our mistake and being in a spot where they could score on us.”
Marble Falls relied on goalie Sebastian Martinez to provide the final line of defense.
“He’s played in all four games for us so far,” Craven said. “He’s getting better and better. He’s a program guy. He gets his number called and fills in well for us. He’s made some pretty big stops and came out (of the goal) at the right time. He’s got a boot on him, so he’s able to clear the ball away. He’s a tall body.”
During the last two years, Marble Falls and Achieve were in the same district. In 2023, they shared the district crown. Last year the Mustangs won it outright.
“Last year we beat them pretty good,” Craven said. “They’re always a good program.”
The Mustangs will compete in the Round Rock Cedar Ridge tournament Saturday, Jan. 11.
