The Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer’s fifth and sixth-grade teams advanced to the next round of the Hill Country Youth Football and Cheer playoffs.
The sixth-graders defeated Lampasas 44-0 Nov. 2. The Mustangs led 30-0 at the intermission. That meant a running clock in the second half.
Head coach Nicholas Wood said the Mustangs used their powerful running game to set the tone.
“On the first play, we ran a trap play and broke it for a touchdown,” he said.
Quincy Rodriguez had 10 rushes for 122 yards and four touchdowns, while Ayden Alexander had two carries for 47 yard and Easton Packer had four rushing yards.
Quarterback Charles Wood had seven carries for 108 yards and a score and completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sanchez.
The touchdown pass came on a “stick” route where the receiver runs five yards and can turn it into an out route depending on the defense.
So the five-yard pass turned into an explosive score.
“We knew we could run over those guys, get after them and catch and pass,” the coach said. “For weeks, we didn’t run the ball one time. Our kids were eager to get back to running the ball.”
The coach couldn’t commend the defense enough for another shutout.
“(They) led the way,” he said.
Defensive linemen Hayden Osti, Austin Miller, Jaxon Howard and Chris Daniel “caused problems for Lampasas from their positions” and Reese Butler “made multiple tackles from his linebacker position.”
The playoff win was the latest in a tremendous season. Both Marble Falls fifth- and sixth-grade squads had 7-1 records.
This season, the Marble Falls youth league installed the base version of new Marble Falls High School head coach Keri Timmerman’s offense.
“We passed more (this season) than we ever passed before,” Wood said. “We can spread the field with a four-man line, we can hand it off, and run at them.”
The Marble Falls fifth-graders defeated Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Navy 34-6 and will face Smithson Valley in the next round.
The Marble Falls sixth-graders welcome Copperas Cove at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, to Mustang Stadium.
