The Faith Academy of Marble Falls volleyball team beat Austin San Juan Diego 3-1 Oct. 8 to go to 5-3 in District 5-3A of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

“We’re exactly where we need to be,” head coach Erin Sawyer said.

The Lady Flames (14-15-2), who are no worse than third in the district standings, took the first set 25-23, lost the second 19-25, and won the third 25-12.

In the pivotal fourth set, Faith won 27-25. That illustrated the one characteristic that Sawyer has been emphasizing since she changed up the lineup and rotations.

“As a whole, our team is playing a lot better together,” she said. “We’re coming in sync in the spots they need to play with the people they’re with. I think we’re being a lot smarter.”

The coach has a lot of respect for her seniors, pointing out they have been inclusive, have shared their knowledge, and have been a calming influence.

“My seniors have a lot to give to the underclassmen,” she said. “It’s a learning experience for both the current younger girls and the upperclassmen. They push one another to make each other better.”

Sawyer added this team illustrates Proverbs 27:17.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another,” she quoted. “They can all sharpen each other, and they can all work together.”

Faith welcomes San Antonio Lutheran Thursday, Oct. 10, with the subvarsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
