The Mustangs (2-4) now prepare for the Burnet Bulldogs (4-2) in the District 4-4A Division I opener Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at home.

Down 21-13 at the half, Marble Falls received the ball to start the third quarter. Junior Joaquin Aguilar had a a big return. He was eventually tackled on the Devine 29-yard line. Minor found senior receiver Kole Becker on the two-point pass that evened the score at 21-21 29 seconds into the second half.

On its first offensive play of the half, Devine was called for holding that put the War Horses (5-1) behind the chains. On fourth and two, they chose to attempt a fake punt the Mustangs stuffed.

Taking over at the Devine 28-yard line, Minor found senior tight end Noah Lyon and Becker on passes that reached the War Horses’ 11. But a dropped pass on first down and an incomplete pass in the end zone on third down resulted in a 25-yard field goal by junior Jett Marcum for a 24-21 lead with 6:26 left in the third stanza.

Devine’s second possession was promising until Lyon caught an interception.

And though the War Horses had back-to-back sacks, Minor hit Becker on a 35-yard pass to get to the Devine 25-yard line. Five plays later Aguilar scored, but a holding call took the points off the scoreboard. The drive ended when Marcum connected on a 23-yard field goal with 8:25 left in the contest.

Devine made a solid commitment to running the football on the next 15 plays that covered 69 yards. It ended on a two-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left in the contest that gave the War Horses a 28-27 advantage.

The War Horses recorded a sack on the game’s final play.

Devine began the game by covering 78 yards on about a 15-play drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown by senior running back Anthony Saldivar for a 7-0 lead. The drive took about 8 minutes.

Marble Falls responded with a nine-play, 81-yard drive that ended when Aguilar caught a two-yard pass from Minor. The extra point was good to tie the game at 7-7.

The War Horses’ next offensive possession ended with a 53-yard touchdown and a 14-7 advantage.

The Mustangs answered with an 82-yard drive that ended on a Minor scamper to pay dirt from 12 yards out. But the extra point was missed. The drive was highlighted by a 65-yard pass to junior receiver Kaden Langbein.

Devine scored on its final possession of the first half, going 68 yards in seven plays in a drive that ended on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 left in the second period.
