Marble Falls football beats Crockett in season opener

The Marble Falls High School football team crushed Austin Crockett 56-0 in the season opener for both teams Aug. 30.

The Mustangs (1-0) were led to victory by junior quarterback Doak Timmerman, who scored five of the team’s eight touchdowns.

“We got great offense and we shut them out,” he said. “Great defense. We got guys in the field who know what they’re doing, can play well, and I just think we bond as a team and we’re still working on where we should be.”

“The kids are doing a great job,” head coach Keri Timmerman said. “I think that they’re working really hard to gel as a unit, and luckily, we’ve got a few games before we get to district to do that, so that’s kind of the building.”

Marble Falls had seven possessions in the first half. Timmerman had touchdown runs of 15 yards, 49 yards, 1 yard and 7 yards for a 27-0 lead.

Senior linebacker Noah Lyon recorded a safety with 5 minutes and 55 seconds left in the half for the 29-0 advantage at the intermission.

The Mustangs received the opening kickoff of the second half, and marched 55 yards in six plays thanks to Timmerman forcing his way to the end zone from three yards out.

After the Marble Falls defense forced another punt, junior running back Joaquin Aguilar scored a 17-yard touchdown run to end a three-play, 16-yard drive for a 43-0 advantage with 6:18 left in the third quarter.

Junior defensive tackle Jesse Flores recovered a Cougar fumble at the Crockett 20-yard line.

Three plays later junior receiver Kaden Langbein weaved his way to pay dirt from four yards out.

The Marble Falls defense forced a turnover on downs, and junior running back Gabriel Larranaga needed only one play from 13 yards out to score.

Marble Falls racked up 317 yards of total offense with 242 coming from the ground on 31 carries. Doak Timmerman credited the offensive line for the production. Aguilar had nine carries for 117 yards and a score, while Timmerman had 13 rushes for 89 yards and five touchdowns.

“Seven touchdowns speaks for itself,” he said. “We got dudes on the line. The line deserves a big shoutout tonight.”

He said the win is symbolic of the hours of work the players have put in for months.

“As a team, we grew as a family, we’re here every day, summer workouts, 8 in the morning, 10, we’ll go get breakfast after we work, we do 7 on 7, we’re here at 5:30 in the morning,” the quarterback said. “And when you’re with dudes like that at 5:30 in the morning all day, you grow into a family. And there’s just some great guys on this team, and I love them.”

Meanwhile the Mustang defense was simply dominant. That unit allowed a total of 43 yards in four quarters, recovered three fumbles and recorded a safety.

“(Defensive coordinator Ryan Craven) does a phenomenal job with it, and he’s very, very intense and I think that our kids kind of feed on that,” the head coach said. “I think they follow. I think we both are (intense), to some extent. As a play caller and having to be a head coach, you tend to just lean on energy and let them follow your lead. But I think our kids are learning to be aggressive.”

Timmerman was victorious in his debut as the Mustangs skipper after accepting the job in December. It’s the first time the Mustangs won their season opener since they beat Pflugerville Connally 52-7 Aug. 25, 2022.

“It was a team that had a lot of success in the past and had success recently and for whatever reason, multiple things, you have some slide back at times, even with good teams,” he said. “I think that it just proves that our kids are hungry for success. The community is hungry for success, and I’ve just got to help them get there.”

Marble Falls travels to Jarrell at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.

FIRST HALF

The Marble Falls High School football team built a 29-0 lead against Austin Crokett at the half.

Leading the way is junior quarterback Doak Timmerman who scored all four touchdowns.

The first came on the Mustangs’ second possession when he capped a four-play, 33-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run that was either a busted play or a trick play. A Mustang lineman fell backward as the ball was snapped with players on both sides standing. Then Timmerman ran to his right and found the end zone. The two-point run was no good but Marble Falls led 6-0.

That opened the floodgates.

Timmerman capped a four-play, 55-yard drive with a 49-yard run for a 13-0 advantage with 2 minutes and 41 seconds left in the first quarter.

Marble Falls’ next score came early in the second quarter. Timmerman found senior receiver Parker Phillips for a 27-yard pass to move the Mustangs to the Cougar 15-yard line on first down. Junior running back Joaquin Aguilar ran 11 yards to the Crockett one-yard line. Timmerman scored on the next play for a 20-0 advantage with 9:42 remaining in the half.

Marble Falls junior defensive back Gregory Lemon recovered a fumble on the Crockett 47.

On first down Timmerman found senior tight end Noah Lyon for a 26-yard pass between four Cougars. Three plays later Timmerman scored from seven yards out and a 27-0 lead with 7:34 left in the half.

Lyon also sacked the Cougar quarterback for a safety on the next series for the 29-0 lead at the intermission.

The Mustangs earned 214 yards of total offense.
