Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer signups for fall football happening now
Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer is conducting its fall registration now until June 7.
The league is for elementary-aged students through the sixth grade. Cost is $190 and includes jersey, pants, socks, helmets and shoulder pads.
MFYFC president Joshua Henderson said playing in this league will only help these youngsters. One way is by learning the basics of new Marble Falls High School football head coach Keri Timmerman’s scheme.
Volunteer coaches have received an introduction and instruction in Zimmerman’s base scheme, complete with terminology and how he wants the Mustangs to block, tackle, catch and protect the football, Henderson said.
The earlier these young athletes can learn those basic elements, the quicker coaches at Marble Falls middle school and high school coaches can install the more complex plays that get players excited about playing the sport.
“The kids know how to do it, so by the time they get to the middle school and high school, they have the knowledge,” Henderson said. “We’re excited about this year.”
The association also has cheerleaders, who are on the sidelines to encourage the teams. One new bonus piece this season are the volunteer coaches – members of the Marble Falls High School cheer squad.
Just like the football players, the cheerleaders will help their younger counterparts learn routines and cheers, which will only help them as they get older.
“The young kids will ge an opportunity to work with the high school cheerleaders,” Henderson said. “It’s a great way for our high school kids to get leadership skills.”
Go to MFYFC.org to register online and have birth certificates and proof of residency handy.
The association also is conducting its flag football spring season that starts May 14. Though registration is closed, Henderson was encouraged by the number of players who signed up — 140 — pointing out it’s a terrific sign for the future of Mustang football.
Each of the three divisions will have two teams. The freshman division is for Kindergarten and first-graders, the junior varsity division is for second- and third-graders, and the varsity division is for fourth- and fifth-graders.
Practices are Tuesdays at Marble Falls Middle School and games are Thursdays at Mustang Stadium on the Marble Falls High School campus.
“It’s a way for kids to get out and get experience,” Henderson said. “If they can make it through flag, they’ll get an idea on how to roll through a lot of (tackle football in the fall).”
