Marble Falls High School sophomore Cooper Womack is the District 24-4A boys singles champion for the second year in a row.

Womack faced Lago Vista’s Reagan McLaughlin for the singles title March 27. The points were long as each player looked to set up winning shots. But Womack went to the offensive, moving toward the net and volleying when he had the chance. McLaughlin used the lob to force Womack to retreat to get the ball. But instead of the Mustang quitting on the shot, he sent it back over to extend the point.

Then when a ball was hit too soft or not far enough, Womack pounced. He used his powerful overhead smash to bounce the ball to the other side of the court and out of play for the point.

Womack won the first set 6-2 then McLaughlin retired because of health.

“McLaughlin is a very good player, and they’ve played each other a few times,” Marble Falls head coach Samuel Whitley said. “It was big points. That first set was long points and both were feeling the other out. Cooper did a great job of adjusting his play to the long points. He attacked the net when he was supposed to.”

The girls doubles team of Chloe Brown and Amaris Mitchell captured the bronze medal after competing in three matches. They are the district’s first alternates.

The third match was especially challenging, Whitley said.

Though the first set went to Lampasas on a tiebreaker, the Lady Mustangs won the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.

“(The match) was a very competitive match,” the coach said. “They did the things they were capable. They took chances or risks when they needed to.”

The boys doubles team of Collin Schilling and Riley Stence placed fourth.

“I thought they did a great job being senior leaders,” Whitley said.

The coach noted the district tournament featured lots of talented players from different schools who challenged one another to play their best.

“I’m very proud of the performances of the whole team,” he said.
