The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Jarrell 3-2 March 22 to end the first round of District 24-4A play.
Head coach Tyler Porter noted the runs were earned.
“We hit and moved them around a little bit,” he said.
The Cougars (9-9-1, 2-3) took advantage of free bases and defensive miscues.
“We started giving stuff away,” Porter said. “One hit a ball over the outfielder’s head.”
In the sixth inning, a Cougar walked, went to second on a bunt, third on a pass ball, and scored on another pass ball.
Porter noted a couple of positives from the game.
“We pitched better than we have in the past,” he said. “We cut down on our strikeouts. For some of the kids, the district games are a different feel. We’re moving kids around in different positions, which helped.”
He’s seeing his newcomers adjust to the bright lights of playing in a varsity contest, noting that not many of his seniors have played the significant innings they are now.
The Mustangs’ (8-9, 0-5) goal, the coach noted, is to qualify for the playoffs and win a bi-district championship. They have 10 games left in the regular season to earn a spot, and Porter added it’s time to make them count.
“We keep saying we have this many games left,” he said. “We’re running out. We’re getting better. We’re turning in the right direction. Every time the kids step on the field, we’re getting better.”
Marble Falls welcomes Lampasas Tuesday, March 26, and travels to face the Badgers Thursday, March 28, in a short week because of Easter. The junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity follows at 7 p.m.
