Marble Falls track continues upward trend at Taylor meet
The Marble Falls High School track and field varsity teams each finished third overall in the team divisions of the Cotton Boll Relays hosted by Taylor High School March 7.
The Mustangs scored 108 points, while the Lady Mustangs earned 91 points in the varsity divisions.
“When kids get handed a gold, silver or bronze medal, a fascinating phenomenon takes place — they start to believe in themselves more and as a result, they start working more,” head coach Austin Silva said. “(They’re) pushing themselves more at practice. More kids decide to come out and join because they see the success their friends are having and want to be a part of it. And that’s what we are starting to see with our team, which is the reason behind the third place finish(es).”
The Burnet Bulldogs won the boys varsity division with 140 points, while the Lady Dawgs finished as the runners-up in the varsity division with 140 points.
Skillful Marble Falls freshman Madison Cuplin earned the meet’s high point award thanks to contributing 54 points toward the Lady Mustangs’ total. She took gold in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet and 6 inches, which puts her in the Texas Top 50 of Texas Mile Split, gold in the triple jump with a leap of 36-3, and gold in the 100 meters in 13.14 seconds. She also joined the 400-meter relay team that finished fourth.
“Being a freshmen, Maddie is starting to turn heads in the area, and I couldn’t be more proud with how she is performing and handling everything so far,” Silva said. “Of course she can get better.”
Other contributors are throwers Kylie Roberts and Jeremiah Bales. Roberts, a junior, earned double gold in the shot put and discus and Bales took silver in the shot put.
“Jeremiah being a senior with a future in football at the next level, it would be easy for him to retire from the rings and focus on the next level,” Silva said. “So the fact that he committed to us says a lot about his character. He’s had a great start to the season with several top three finishes.
“For Kylie, being a 3 sport athlete and consistently finishing first or second in the rings is pretty remarkable,” the coach added. “I know she has her sights set on more and we are confident she will get there.”
Marble Falls will compete at the Fredericksburg meet Saturday, March 16.
