The Marble Falls baseball team went 3-1 at the Llano tournament Feb. 29-March 3.

The Mustangs (6-2) beat the Copperas Cove junior varsity 17-9, Llano 4-2 and Elgin 5-2 and lost to Fredericksburg 9-2.

Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said this tournament served as a confirmation of what he thought the team has.

“Some guys continued doing it,” he said. “That means it’s not a fluke. The freshmen started hitting the ball better.”

After playing three games in two days, Porter used the final game, which was against Cove, to give innings to others who hadn’t had many. The aim was to use the game as an opportunity to help develop and create depth.

By the end of the first inning, the Mustangs led 8-0 thanks to sending 14 batters to the plate. They drew 5 walks and four batters got on first after being hit with a pitch. Sophomore Canon Cochran hit an infield single and senior Sergio Hernandez hit a RBI single to center-right field.

Marble Falls scored 4 runs in the second inning thanks to four hits. Sophomore Atreyu Machacek hit a double to center field and later scored on a RBI single by freshman Owen Nash to center field. Senior Davis Dreisbach hit a RBI single. The other run came home when Cochran walked.

The Mustangs hit the ball well leading up to the Copperas Cove contest. Against Elgin, they had 12 hits. Against Cove, it was nine hits.

“Our offense is good even when they had some lulls in it,” Porter said. “The thing I like about our team is the seniors are doing what they should.”

While the Mustangs committed four errors during game against Cove, which allowed the Bulldogs to trim the deficit to 12-9, Marble Falls answered immediately by putting up five runs in its next at-bat highlighted by Hernandez’s 3 RBI triple to left field.

Porter noted that by the time the Mustangs start the second round of District 24-4A play, his freshmen played 14 non-district games.

“We’ll have a better idea of what to expect,” he said.

The Mustang travel to Lampasas at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, to begin district play.
