The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls track team is a district champion again, while the boys team finished fourth.

The Lady Flames captured the District 3-3A championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools recently by scoring 174 points. It’s their sixth consecutive district crown.

Runner-up San Marcos Academy earned 134 points, while Temple Central Texas Christian finished third with 126 points.

Faith Academy’s points came from taking gold in all three relays thanks to the efforts of Mcklayne Apel, Miley Fessler, Abigail Kosoglow, Halley Offutt, Reese Ramsey, Zoe Rhoads, Eden Thames and Cuyleigh Zimmerman.

Many are freshmen.

“You treat them all like seniors, treat them like competitive athletes,” head coach Steve McCannon said. “You want to get them bought in.”

Apel took double bronze in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, while Braelyn Taylor ran for silver and Ashlyn Rishavy finished with bronze in the 300-meter hurdles.

Rishavy also nabbed bronze in the high jump, while Thames took silver and Rhoads scored bronze in the triple jump, and Fessler earned silver and Natalie Weems took bronze in the shot put.

To illustrate how dominant the Lady Flames were, consider this.

They had top 10 finishes in 15 of the 16 events and in some, had all three Faith Academy athletes finish that high in their events.

“It’s nice winning all the relays,” McCannon said. “We have a very young team and for several of our qualifiers, it’s their first time. You develop by qualifying and getting in most meets. It was a nice win, and we scored in every event, which helps a lot.”

The Flames were paced by Landon Silvers, who won gold in the 300-meter hurdles and silver in the 110-meter hurdles and Beau Steele, who took gold in the 800 meters. Andrew Huoy won bronze in the 400 meters.

The 800-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams finished first, while the 400-meter relay was fourth. The runners are Asher Apel, Egan Barnes, Braxton Blair, Graham McGraw, Houy, Silvers and Steele.

“The boys did great,” McCannon said. “We qualified for what we thought we’d qualify for. We had big wins in the relays, the 800 and the 300 hurdles. We were trying to win where we could. We had some really good times, some seasons best in the times. We don’t have the deepest team. We just wanted to compete. We’re going to go out there and compete.”

CTC won the meet with 210 points, while Waco Live Oak was second with 152 points and San Marcos Academy finished third with 124 points.

The Class 3A South Regional Meet is Friday, April 25, at Matador Stadium at Seguin High School. Field events begin at 8:45 a.m., the 3,200 meters is at 9:30 a.m. and the running finals begin at 2:15 p.m.

One key difference in this district is that the top five finishers in each event advance to regionals. That’s because seven schools are in the district.

“We’re trying to win state titles,” McCannon said. “Getting to state and getting the experience – that’s what we’re trying to aim for. I’m proud of the teams. They’re stepping up. Success breeds success. We’re trying to build it.”
