The Burnet High School baseball team crushed Jarrell 12-3 April 11 in District 24-4A play.
The win meant a clean sweep for the Bulldogs.
“I think we pitched really well in both games,” head coach Russell Houston said.
The Bulldogs (12-7, 4-5 fourth in district) scored four in the first inning before the Cougars (4-17, 1-6) answered with a run in the second inning.
Burnet plated two in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead. Jarrell answered by scoring two in the third. But the Bulldogs outscored the Ducks 6-0 in the final three-and-a-half innings thanks to recording a total of 14 hits.
Senior Alex Cantrill led with a triple followed by doubles from junior Cason O’Hair and seniors Khris Kassner, Trey Morrow and Matthew Valdez, who had 3 RBI.
The entire batting order produced at least 1 RBI.
“We scored in every inning,” Houston said. “I thought our kids swung it well. It comes down to can you get two-out hits and can you get the third out of the inning (before they can score)?”
Senior pitcher Cooper Faris got the win thanks to 9 strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore pitcher Mason Watson finished the contest and recored 2 strikeouts in two innings.
“(Faris) didn’t have any walks and had one hit by pitch,” Houston said. “If you can play clean baseball in high school baseball, you give yourself a chance.”
Burnet slipped past Leander 13-12 in a non-district contest April 12.
Cantrill and Kassner each hit homers and senior Noah Crawford hit two doubles, while senior Drake Milam had one.
Junior Cohen Jorpeland, senior Rhett Murray and sophomore Cade Park each pitched.
“Great team win,” Houston said. “Good job finding a way.”
Lampasas (17-4-2, 9-1 second in district) swept Marble Falls (10-13, 4-4 third in district) 11-1 and 5-2, while Taylor swept Georgetown Gateway (6-13, 0-8) 8-7 and 3-2.
The Bulldogs will enjoy their district bye this week and finish the regular season against Gateway. The Gators visit Bulldog Diamonds Tuesday, April 22, then welcome Burnet Friday, April 25. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
